  • Teaching Hospital: Yes, Academic Medical Center
  • Chest Pain Center
  • Burn Center
  • Stroke Center

Unit Information:

  • Beds: 55 horizontal, 6 vertical, 15 observation, 5 BH holding
  • Average patients/day: 200-220
  • Minimum Years of Experience required: 2 years
  • First-time travelers accepted only with 3+ years of Level 1 trauma center experience

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:

  • Fast-paced unit with a variety of cases including Trauma/Stroke/STEMI/Burn
  • Common conditions: GSWs, stabbings, multi-trauma, MVC, MI, CVA, hypothermia, drownings, falls, conscious sedations, defibrillating, cardiac arrest/respiratory arrest, sexual assault, overdoses, psychosis, pacing, and vent management

Patient Ratios:

  • RN: 3:1, 4:1, 5:1, 6:1 based on clinical area worked or acuity
  • LPN: 4:1/5:1/6:1 based on clinical area worked or acuity

Required Licensure & Certifications:

  • RN: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC (Resource Team Requirements)

Support within the Department:

  • ED Tech: ADLs, vital signs, I/O cath, foley placement, phlebotomy
  • Unit Secretary
  • Charge nurse
  • 24/7 Critical Care Pharmacists
  • Paramedic Staff
  • Resource Nurse - Pod leaders
  • RT 24/7
  • Hospitalist 24/7
  • Intensivist 24/7
  • SANE Quality Coordinator
  • Telemetry monitoring/no Tech

Technology/Equipment:

  • EMR: Epic
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Med dispensing: Omnicell
  • Monitors: Phillips
  • Unit specific equipment: GE Ultrasounds for point of care, GE EKG machines
