Assistant Director of Nursing - LTC/SNF

Job Description

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing Services in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the daily operations of the Nursing Department. This role ensures that all activities adhere to current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing long-term care facilities. The ADON is committed to maintaining the highest quality of care at all times and will assume the responsibilities of the Director of Nursing in their absence.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred.
• Holds a current registered nurse license in the state of practice.
• Minimum of two years in a management or leadership position, plus long-term care experience preferred.
• Experience in acute or rehabilitation care preferred.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

I. Clinical Component

• Nursing Process:
  • Develops, interprets, implements, and evaluates standards of care, policies, and procedures for all patient/resident populations.
  • Assures patient/resident rights are upheld and advocates for their needs.
  • Guides staff nurses in recognizing and managing potential clinical issues.
  • Coordinates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Oversees staff competency and continuous professional development.
  • Collaborates with healthcare team members to ensure safe medication administration and effective care planning.
• Quality Improvement:
  • Acts as an advocate for safe patient care delivery.
  • Participates in various committee meetings and in-services.
  • Maintains professional credentials, including RN license and CPR certification.
  • Implements quality improvement initiatives and corrective actions as needed.
  • Conducts medical record quality reviews and participates in data collection for quality monitoring.

II. Educational Component

• Education:
  • Contributes to patient, resident, and family educational programs.
  • Participates in facility orientation and identifies staff learning needs.
  • Serves as a resource and preceptor for nursing students.
• Professional Growth:
  • Engages in educational programs that enhance nursing practice.
  • Shares relevant knowledge and current best practices with staff.

III. Management Component

• Responsibilities to the Nursing Department:
  • Adheres to philosophy and policy guidelines of the facility.
  • Evaluates clinical competency of nursing personnel and makes improvement recommendations.
  • Directs nursing personnel during emergency situations.
  • Assesses and improves nursing practices and care delivery systems.
  • Maintains accountability for narcotics and controlled substances.
  • Completes performance appraisals as required.

Specific Requirements

• Must possess an unencumbered, active state Registered Nurse license.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work tactfully with various stakeholders.
• Knowledge of current nursing and medical practices, laws, and regulations pertaining to long-term care.
• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities.
• Ability to manage stress and engage respectfully with challenging situations and individuals.

Shift Information

This position typically operates on a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but may require flexibility to meet patient and staffing needs. Weekend coverage may be necessary, along with participation in an on-call rotation.

Minimum Years of Experience

Three years of relevant nursing experience is required.
