Unit Information:

  • Beds: 30
  • Census: Average patients/day:

Minimum Years of Experience required: 3 years of ICU experience with 1-year CVICU experience

  • Will you accept a first-time traveler: Yes, as long as they meet above criteria

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:

  • Cardiac: Immediate post-op CABG, TAVR/TMVR, valve repairs/replacement, heart transplants, Pacemakers (epicardial, transvenous)
  • Thoracic surgeries: Fresh post op esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, lobectomy
  • Vascular: Fresh post-op AAA, TVAR, carotid endarterectomy

Patient Ratios:

  • RN: 1:1, 1:2 if regular ICU status, 1:3 mixed status
  • Tech: 1:8-10

Required License, National Certification, Certs:

  • BLS, ACLS
  • CCRN preferred

Skills required:

  • Competent in invasive line monitoring (Swan Ganz, a-lines), pacemakers (epicardial, TV), chest tubes, cardiac medications (inotropes, vasopressors, sedation/paralytics), ventilator/trach management, cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • RN draw out of invasive lines; not allowed to do peripheral sticks
  • EPIC experience
  • Prefer travelers with specific CV surgical experience (ECMO, CVVH, IABP, VAD)

Support within the Department:

  • Charge nurse, rarely with patient assignment
  • HUC 24/7
  • Dedicated CVICU Intensivist 24/7
  • CT Surgeon on call 24/7
  • Hospitalist onsite 24/7
  • General Intensivist 24/7
  • ICU Designated RT 24/7
  • Bedside/nurses station telemetry monitoring, no tele tech
  • Phlebotomy to assist with peripheral blood draws

Technology/Equipment:

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Med dispensing: Pyxis
  • Monitors: Client
  • Unit specific equipment:

Floating: If yes, where:

  • ED Holding (board patients waiting for an inpatient bed)
  • Other ICU s (MRICU, SICU, CICU, Neuro ICU)

Orientation (facility and unit) :

  • 1 day of orientation
  • 2-4h of NEO with supervisor/nurse educator
  • After NEO, will be placed on the unit with a preceptor

Scheduling:

  • Weekend rotation: Every other
  • On call: No
  • Holiday Expectations: 1-2 per contract
  • Approval of RTO: ok to approve up to 7 days
  • Shift times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
  • Schedule cycle: 6-week schedule. Will receive 1-2 weeks prior to schedule beginning
  • AAH adheres to a fatigue policy where all staff, including travelers, cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts.

    • Day: 1-2 block, has shuttle service
