Registered Nurse – CSICU / CVICU (Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care)
Location: Tuscaloosa, AL
Schedule: 3x12 or 4x12 Night Shift | 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (36 or 48 Hours/Week) | Every Other Weekend & Holidays as Required
Contract Duration: 13 Weeks
Position Overview
The Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU / 4 North) provides high-acuity, specialized care focused primarily on the immediate post-operative recovery of adult and geriatric patients following complex cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries. Working in a 4-bed ICU environment (supported by an 8-bed stepdown unit and a dedicated cardiovascular nurse educator), the RN must demonstrate advanced clinical competency in complex invasive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation management, and post-cardiac surgical recovery protocols.
Key Responsibilities
• Post-Operative Cardiac Care: Direct the immediate post-operative recovery of open-heart, thoracic, and vascular surgical patients.
• Hemodynamic & Critical Assessment: Manage complex invasive hemodynamic lines (arterial lines, CVP, Swan-Ganz/PA catheters), vasoactive continuous infusions, and advanced airway equipment.
• Onboarding Assessment: Successfully pass a Basic Dysrhythmia examination during onboarding (maximum 2 attempts permitted).
• Unit Collaboration: Work closely with cardiovascular surgeons, intensivists, and the dedicated cardiovascular educator to maintain optimal patient outcomes.
• Unit & System Floating: Flexibly float as assigned to the Cardiac Stepdown Unit (CSU), other critical care areas, or affiliated regional hospital facilities.
Position Qualifications
Mandatory Requirements
• Licensure: Active Alabama RN License or active Compact/Multi-State RN License (Temporary licenses are not accepted).
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of recent CVICU / CSICU nursing experience.
• Certifications:
o BLS: Active Basic Life Support through American Heart Association (AHA).
o NIHSS: Active Stroke Certification.
• Education: Minimum Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree.
• EHR Proficiency: Experience with Meditech charting system.
Preferred Qualifications
• PALS: AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (preferred if floating to pediatric care areas).
• Advanced Credentials: CCRN or CSC certification.
