Nurse-patient ratios are 1:1, 1:2, or 2:1, depending on patient acuity. Common diagnoses include post open heart surgical patients such as CABG, Valve procedures, Vascular procedures, and Unstable angina. Familiarity with cardiac events requiring ICU care is necessary, including ventilated patients and overflow patients from other ICUs. Experience with specialized intervention equipment such as IABPs, Impellas, and ECMO is required. RNs are expected to titrate various drips including dopamine, dobutamine, and levophed, among others. Charge nurses and house supervisors are available 24/7 and may take teams at times. Patient care techs are available with ratios running from 1:12 to 1:15, depending on staffing. Providers are present in-house 24/7. Immediate availability of respiratory therapists is ensured. RNs will be responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips. All patients are connected to a Philips monitoring system. Shifts are 12 hours, from either 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Weekend requirements include every other weekend, and holiday coverage is necessary every other holiday. Travelers may be required to float to every level of care and take a full patient assignment. Scrubs must be appropriate in appearance and clean; no specific color requirements exist. The unit needs someone proficient in all cardiovascular ICU components, with a bonus for experience in immediate post-op, VAD, and transplant cases. Daily utilization of swans, CVC, and arterial lines is expected. Multiple drips need to be titrated frequently, with many ventilated patients on assignment. Cancellation policy allows for client cancellations up to 12 hours every 13 weeks. Charting system utilized is EPIC.
