Job Title: Registered Nurse - CVICU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Current Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Fresh open heart experience preferred. Experience with patients greater than 6 hours post-op from open heart surgery. CRRT experience required. Temporary pacemaker and post-permanent pacemaker experience required. Acute MI pre/post-cath experience required. Experience with mediastinal/chest tubes required. Ventilator experience required. Hypothermia protocol experience required. Experience with dripping medications required. Arterial line experience required. IABP/Impella experience preferred. Hemodynamic monitoring/Swan-Ganz experience preferred. Description: The CVICU is a mixed acuity unit with both step-down and ICU status patients. The nurse-to-patient ratios include 1:1 for fresh hearts and devices, 1:2 for ICU status patients, and 1:3 for step-down status patients. Common diagnoses in the unit include atrial fibrillation, heart blocks, bradycardia, NSTEMI, STEMI, cardiac arrest, hyper/hypotension, pulmonary embolisms, cardiogenic shock, heart surgery, and heart failure. Nurses are required to titrate various drips, including Cardizem, Cordarone, Cardene, nitroglycerin, esmolol, cleviprex, milrinone, dopamine, dobutamine, lasix, bumex, epinephrine, levophed, vasopressin, insulin, heparin, aggrastat, precedex, propofol, versed, and fentanyl. There is a rare potential for charge nurse duties on the night shift, which will include taking assignments. Patient care technicians are available at a ratio of 1 to 2 per shift. The unit is staffed with hospitalists or intensivists in-house and respiratory therapists available 24/7. Nurses are required to read their own strips, which are monitored off the unit. Self-scheduling and block scheduling requests are allowed but can be adjusted to meet unit needs. Every other weekend and holiday work are required as needed. Travelers will float first, primarily to acute care and ICU, with possible float to medical-surgical and telemetry. The dress code consists of royal blue scrubs. Unit orientation lasts one week, including modules and training. The charting system used in the unit is Epic.
