Unit: 8 Heart Progressive Care Unit
Interview: SimpliFi clinical interview with manager approval
Beds: 16
Ratio: 1:5
Minimum Experience: One year
First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Weekends: Every other weekend
Call: None
Holidays: Based on unit needs
EMR: Cerner
Scrubs: Galaxy blue
Parking: Free badge-access parking

Required Credentials

• BLS
• NIHSS
• ACLS preferred

Required Experience and Skills

• Postoperative cardiac-surgery experience
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Chest-tube management
• Tracheostomy care
• Peripheral IV insertion
• Phlebotomy
• External pacer and pulse-generator experience
• Management of the following drips:
  • Primacor
  • Amiodarone
  • Dobutamine
  • Heparin

Patient Population

This intermediate-care/step-down cardiac unit treats patients with:

• Postoperative CABG
• Valve repair or replacement
• Chest pain
• Cardiac dysrhythmias
• Pre- and post-pacemaker/AICD placement
• Pre- and post-cardiac catheterization
• Congestive heart failure

Staffing and Equipment

• Two PCAs/CNAs on days
• One PCA/CNA on nights
• One health unit coordinator on days
• Charge RN carries a patient assignment
• Plum ICU Medical infusion pumps
• Omnicell medication dispensing
• Philips cardiac monitors
• External pacemakers and pulse generators

Floating and Scheduling

• May float to other units within demonstrated scope and competency
• Floating notification is typically provided through Smart Square approximately one hour before the shift
• RTO requires nurse manager approval

Orientation

• Day 1: New-employee orientation
• Day 2: Patient Experience and NVCI
• Day 3: Nursing orientation
• Day 4: Day-shift unit orientation
• Day 5: Night-shift unit orientation
