Behavioral Health RN – Day Shift

Care Setting: Acute inpatient behavioral health
Shift: 12-hour days, 6:30 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday
Interview: Manager interview; no clinical interview
Trauma Level: Level III
EMR: Epic
BSN Required: No
License Pending: Candidates may submit while awaiting licensure

Unit Details

The behavioral health department is staffed as one combined unit:

• General Adult Unit: 14 beds
• Special Care Unit: 8 beds
• Pediatric Unit: 14 beds
• Travelers typically work with adults but may receive pediatric assignments
• Typical RN ratio: 1:6–7
• Behavioral health technician/aide ratio: Approximately 1:14 when fully staffed
• No routine floating outside the department

Patient Population

Patients may present with:

• Schizophrenia
• Bipolar disorder
• Anxiety and depression
• Suicidal ideation
• Other acute behavioral health conditions

Requirements

• Active RN license preferred; facility is willing to wait for licensure
• Current AHA BLS
• Behavioral health nursing experience
• Strong verbal de-escalation and therapeutic communication skills
• Ability to manage up to seven patients, including admissions and discharges
• Must be comfortable caring for both adult and pediatric behavioral health patients
• Epic experience preferred

Additional Details

• No IV-drip titration or telemetry
• Respiratory equipment may include BiPAP, CPAP, and oxygen
• RNs complete two-hour rounds and assist with rounding during short staffing
• No regular call; occasional on-call placement may occur for an overtime shift
• Orientation includes one adult-unit shift and one pediatric-unit shift
• Navy-blue scrubs required
• Artificial nails are prohibited

Submission and Facility Policies

• 50-mile radius rule: Candidate’s driver’s license must show an address at least 50 miles from the facility
• Driver’s license required at submission
• Candidates cannot currently work full-time, part-time, or PRN for any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility
• Open-book exam completed during orientation; minimum passing score is 90%

• Failure to pass the exam may result in termination
