JOB SUMMARY
SMH is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join the Operating Room (OR) team for a 13–26 week contract. The OR RN will provide comprehensive perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures in a high-acuity hospital environment.
The ideal candidate will have strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the perioperative process.
- Prepare the operating room, patient, equipment, and supplies according to surgical and facility requirements.
- Perform preoperative assessments and verify patient identity, surgical procedure, consent, allergies, and other safety requirements.
- Assist with patient positioning, surgical preparation, and maintenance of a safe and sterile environment.
- Serve as a circulating nurse and assist with intraoperative patient monitoring, documentation, and coordination of surgical activities.
- Monitor patient condition throughout procedures and promptly communicate changes to the surgical and anesthesia teams.
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient care, surgical counts, medications, specimens, and intraoperative events.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to promote efficient surgical care.
- Assist with patient transfer and provide appropriate handoff communication to the receiving unit.
- Follow infection-control practices, surgical safety protocols, hospital policies, and regulatory standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS certification preferred/required based on facility requirements.
- Previous Operating Room / Perioperative Nursing experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, patient safety, infection prevention, and sterile technique.
- Excellent clinical assessment, communication, organizational, and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity Level 4 hospital environment.
- Flexibility to work rotating shifts based on departmental scheduling needs.
