Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neuro Med-Surg unit requiring level 1 trauma and prior neuro unit experience.

Details

  • Acute care Neuro Med-Surg unit with 54 beds (some semi-private)
  • Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and general neuroscience diagnoses, with some medical overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
  • High flow oxygen used for stable COVID patients, though rare on this unit
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage available 24/7
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios of 1:9-10 days/evenings and 1:10-12 nights
  • Uses EPIC EMR system
  • 12-hour day shift schedule
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • Floating required in rotation with staff; general unit floats to general floor, with restricted floating to skills-competent areas only if needed
  • No call or standby requirements

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required at time of consideration
  • BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • Previous travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Must be able to pass a negative drug screen for all panels

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care to neuroscience patients including stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, and head injury cases
  • Charge nurses do not typically take a patient assignment unless staffing is short
  • 2-day unit orientation includes computer training and unit-specific education with an educator, plus 1 day of patient care with a preceptor
  • No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are permitted
  • COVID vaccination is not required for consideration
  • Local candidates are accepted; local rate applies to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
