Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit position requiring prior dedicated neuro unit and Level 1 trauma experience.

Details

  • Work in the Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit of an acute care hospital
  • 54-bed unit with 2 semi-private rooms
  • Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience diagnoses, with some medical overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • Nurse aide/PCT support with ratios of 1:9-10 on days and evenings and 1:10-12 on nights
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage 24/7, with charge nurse only taking assignments when short-staffed
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
  • RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • High flow oxygen used for stable COVID patients on rare occasions
  • 12-hour day shifts
  • EPIC EMR used
  • Every other weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday, both shifts)
  • Every other holiday requirement
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating required within general unit rotation, with limited scope if floated outside the unit

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • Previous travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • EPIC EMR experience preferred

Additional Information

  • Provide direct nursing care to a diverse neuroscience patient population, including drip titration and monitoring
  • Work alongside a 24/7 charge nurse and house supervisor for support
  • Unit-specific orientation includes 2 days with an educator and 1 day with a preceptor providing patient care
  • No specific scrub color required, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are permitted
  • Local candidates accepted; local rate applies to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
  • COVID vaccination is not required for consideration
