Med/Surg Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license with a compact license or eligibility to practice in Indiana
  • At least 2 years of strong medical-surgical nursing experience
  • At least 1 year of professional nursing experience required; recent travel nursing experience is strongly preferred
  • Previous Level II trauma experience preferred
  • Associate degree, nursing certificate, or equivalent nursing education
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification
  • Current NIHSS certification
  • Recent Epic charting experience and ability to complete an Epic checkoff course
  • Strong patient assessment, prioritization, communication, and critical-thinking skills
  • Adaptable, resilient, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced teaching hospital environment

Medical-Surgical RN Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for post-surgical and medically complex adult patients.
  • Care for patients following Whipple procedures, vascular procedures, heart catheterizations, bariatric surgery, ENT procedures, podiatric surgery, thyroid surgery, and open abdominal procedures.
  • Monitor and manage patients with dementia, altered mental status, CIWA or detox needs, fall risks, and frequent repositioning requirements.
  • Perform thorough patient assessments and promptly identify changes in patient condition.
  • Insert and maintain peripheral IVs and manage chest tubes and indwelling drains.
  • Provide continuous bladder irrigation, epidural management, ostomy care, wound care, wound-vac care, packing, and dressing changes.
  • Administer blood products and manage stable infusions, including heparin, furosemide, and pantoprazole drips.
  • Interpret telemetry and provide pre- and post-procedure care for heart catheterization patients, including femoral access and TR-band monitoring.
  • Collaborate with providers, charge nurses, patient care technicians, students, and fellow nurses to promote safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Float within the nurse’s competency area and support nearby units or campuses when assigned.
  • Participate in orientation, unit education, and precepting students or newly hired team members as needed.
