License: Medical Technologist certification issued by a recognized professional organization. Certifications: Medical Laboratory Scientist certification issued by a recognized professional organization. Must-Have: - Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. - Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner. - Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include alternate site assignments. Description: Acts as a resource and role model to employees, which includes training/orienting and providing day-to-day work direction. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, and maintains appropriate staffing levels. Directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues. Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees. Focuses on staff development and resolution of employee concerns to enhance employee morale. Interprets department policies and procedures, and advises and updates staff on procedural changes. Performs all duties of the technical and/or support staff as required. Ensures the implementation and maintenance of quality, efficiency, and safety in the section. Meets all accreditation standards on a continual basis. Demonstrates initiative in tracking and resolving problems. Continually checks the accuracy of processes, test methods, and instruments in the section. Reviews results and clerical errors before they are reported to the medical record. Assigns work for the section and assists in workload evaluations as needed. Delegates authority and responsibility as appropriate to ensure work is completed and reported in a timely manner. Participates in writing and reviewing policies and procedures. Serves as a staff resource regarding technical and administrative policies and procedures. Participates in the policy and procedure review process. Documents all appropriate information for quality assurance and improvement. Utilizes laboratory information systems appropriately. Ascertains that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples. Provides general direction and technical assistance to Medical Laboratory Technicians/Technologists and support staff. Assists in the development of education and training protocols; instructs students, residents, and new caregivers as assigned. Assists in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes. Ensures compliance with all relevant accrediting agency standards. Maintains constructive and effective communication to enhance department performance. Supports change efforts within the organization and contributes to their successful implementation. Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for the majority of the workday. May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radioactive, and infectious agents. Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids. Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed. Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
