Description:
This position prioritizes and performs a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests on various biological specimens.
It involves reviewing, evaluating, documenting, and reporting results.
Confidentiality of patients is preserved, and lab safety and maintenance protocols are followed.
The role includes training and supervising trainees, laboratory assistants, and clerks as needed.
Essential functions include employing positive patient identification procedures to ensure specimen integrity for all testing phases.
The position requires performing proper specimen collection, labeling, handling, preservation, processing, transportation, and storage.
Adherence to HIPAA and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations is necessary.
Lab orders must be prioritized according to type and various testing performed following prescribed quality assurance policies and procedures.
Quality control checks are evaluated and documented.
The validity and accuracy of test results must be reviewed, considering physiological conditions, patient age, normal values, and other factors.
Test results are correlated with diagnoses, and incompatible results must be questioned.
Thorough documentation and communication of test results is essential, expediting all critical values to appropriate clinicians.
Contaminated materials and equipment must be disposed of according to policy, and the work area should be properly cleansed after tests.
Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration are part of the role.
Inventory management and restocking of reagents, calibrators, controls, and supplies are required.
Participation in performance improvement evaluations through data collection is necessary.
Adverse events must be documented using incident reporting tools.
Lab assistants and clerks should be oriented, instructed, and supervised as needed.
Other job-related duties may be assigned as necessary.
