This role ensures compliance with established laboratory policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The technician identifies results that require referral to the Pathologist while providing professional, patient-centered service. The primary responsibilities include obtaining, receiving, processing, analyzing, and reporting accurate laboratory specimen results. Laboratory testing is performed in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Blood Gas, and Phlebotomy. The technician recognizes abnormal test results and refers critical values to the Pathologist when necessary. Quality control procedures are performed and documented, following quality assurance guidelines. Medical necessity requirements for tests are screened, and reference laboratory and interface protocols are followed. Drug screening and BAT protocols are adhered to according to client-specific requirements. Laboratory equipment is operated, monitored, and maintained safely and correctly. The technician demonstrates competency in phlebotomy for patients of all ages, from neonatal to geriatric. Compliance with infection control practices, universal precautions, and safety regulations is maintained. Adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements is mandatory, including IDPH, OSHA, CMS, HIPAA, and DHHS standards. Required education is completed, including attendance at in-services and staff meetings, and review of departmental communications. The technician adapts to changing workloads and completes patient care duties within scheduled shifts.
