Job Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist Profession: Tech Specialty: Medical Lab Duration: 14 weeks Shift: Mid Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience preferred. License: Required Certifications: - Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification by a recognized certifying body. Must-Have: - Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent. - Addresses customer inquiries, requests, and concerns thoroughly, following through positively and appropriately. - Effectively communicates both verbally and in writing. Description: Performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols that require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Responsible for quality control, instrument maintenance, and specimen procurement and processing. Performs blood collection duties in a timely manner to ensure availability of test results, as needed. Keeps abreast of changes and updates to technical procedures. Consistently follows established protocols for interpreting and verifying test results. Recognizes abnormal or inconsistent results and investigates appropriately and in a timely manner. Notifies leadership of potential problems immediately to avoid compromising patient care. Completes work assignments in a timely manner by prioritizing and multitasking as appropriate. Maintains workstations in a clean and organized manner. Completes special projects as assigned, utilizing laboratory information systems, electronic medical records, and other tools and resources as appropriate. Consistently communicates possible delays, issues, or potential problems to leadership. Voluntarily completes extra projects, duties, or studies as coordinated by leadership if workload permits. Consistently and accurately performs required quality control procedures and documents results as specified. Performs corrective action as appropriate. Documents out of control situations, providing details of the situation and results of the corrective action taken. Notifies leadership of out of control, discrepant, or unexpected results. Follows specific procedures to correctly operate instrumentation. Performs and documents required instrument maintenance as specified. Communicates with peers regarding instrument and equipment problems and notifies leadership in a timely manner. Documents instrument problems, providing details of the situation and results of the corrective action taken. Actively participates in student and new employee training. Covers training materials thoroughly and provides information regarding the principles and theories of the technical procedures. Assists in developing training curriculum. Recognizes and investigates problems thoroughly and takes corrective action as necessary. Involves peers if appropriate. For problems and issues that cannot be effectively resolved, notifies leadership in a timely manner. Successfully completes all competency assessments required. Follows required performance improvement plans as needed. Effectively performs all work within defined error limits. Addresses customer inquiries, requests, and concerns thoroughly, following through positively and appropriately. Timely informs leadership of issues or concerns. Assists in error detection, investigation, and documentation. Suggests process improvement opportunities and looks for innovative ways to enhance error prevention. Annually provides evidence of participation in continuing education.
