About the Facility

Located in a city in the state, the facility features:

  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Level III NICU
  • Primary Stroke Center

The facility welcomes first-time travelers with a minimum of 18 months of experience in MedSurg and/or ICU, along with EPIC or Cerner experience.

Patient Care Assignments

Nurses will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation, with patient ratios typically ranging from 1:4 to 1:6.

With lower patient loads, RNs are expected to provide comprehensive care, including turning patients and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs).

Unit Information

  • 6 North Trauma Surgical - 23 beds, requiring at least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience, including wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, and medication administration/documentation.
  • 5 South Neuroscience - 33 beds, handling patients with CVA, TBI, seizures, and post-trauma care. Skills required include IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, colostomy care, and surgical site care.
  • 5 North MedSurg/Oncology - 39 beds, with a focus on high acuity and fast-paced MedSurg oncology. Skills preferred include chemo administration and telemetry monitoring.
  • 3 South Orthopedics - 20 beds, caring for patients undergoing orthopedic and spine surgeries, requiring skills in PCA pumps and wound care.
  • 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology - 23 beds, requiring skills in trach care, wound care, IV starts, and CVL dressing changes.

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • NIHSS

Support on the Unit

Support staff includes:

  • CNA with a ratio of 1:10-12
  • Receptionist/HUC
  • Charge nurse
  • Phlebotomy
  • IV/VAT Team
  • Hospitalist
  • Telemetry monitoring tech

Technology and Equipment

  • EMR: Cerner (EPIC experience considered)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360
  • Medication dispensing: Omnicell
  • Monitors: Spacelabs

Floating

Nurses may float to similar units based on patient location, including MedSurg, ICU, and ER tasks as necessary.

Orientation

New travelers or those returning after 1+ years will undergo a 24-hour classroom orientation followed by 24 hours on the unit. Rehires will have orientation based on their last date of employment.

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotations will occur every other weekend or 4 weekends per month.
  • Holiday expectations include working one major and one minor seasonal holiday.
