Unit Information

• 6 North Trauma Surgical
  • Beds: 23
  • Patient Types: General Surgery and Vascular surgeries
  • Required Skills: Trauma/surgical experience, wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV skills, medication administration/documentation, and escalations
• 5 South Neuroscience
  • Beds: 33
  • Patient Types: CVA, TBI, seizure, AMS, spinal fusion, craniotomy, degenerative diseases, post-trauma, angiogram
  • Required Skills: IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG, NGT, colostomy/ostomy, wound care, chest tube care, surgical site care, C-Collar, abdominal binders, restraints
• 5 North MedSurg/Oncology
  • Beds: 39
  • Patient Types: High acuity MedSurg patients, including palliative care and ETOH withdrawal
  • Required Skills: Trach care, chest tubes, PEG tubes, wound care, drains, foleys, IV starts; chemo administration preferred if certified
• 3 South Orthopedics
  • Beds: 20
  • Patient Types: Orthopedic and spine surgeries such as joint replacements, fractures, fusions, laminectomies
  • Required Skills: PCA pumps, wound care (negative pressure dressing), dressing changes, foley, drains (hemovacs/JP drains)
• 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Beds: 23
  • Patient Types: Urology, ENT, ortho, and general MedSurg
  • Required Skills: Trach care, wound care, wound vacs, IV starts, CVL dressing changes, adherence to nurse-driven foley protocol

Role Responsibilities

• Patient ratios: 1:4-6, typically 1:4; expectations include turning patients and assisting with baths and ADLs.
• RNs are expected to maintain a high quality of care even with lower patient loads.
• RNs will be required to read and interpret telemetry strips, documented every four hours.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• NIHSS

Support on the Unit

• CNA: 1:10-12 for VS, ADLs, glucose checks when available
• Receptionist/HUC Available
• Charge nurse present but rarely takes assignments
• Phlebotomy support available
• IV/VAT Team available
• Hospitalist available
• Telemetry monitoring techs are present; RNs are required to interpret telemetry strips

Technology and Equipment

• EMR System: Cerner (EPIC experience will be considered)
• IV Pumps: Plum 360
• Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
• Monitors: Spacelabs

Floating and Orientation

• Floating to similar units is expected as needed.
• New travelers or those returning after 1+ years will have a 24-hour classroom and 24 hours on-unit orientation.

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month.
