The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical and communication skills in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families. The Registered Professional Nurse assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The RN develops specialized skills in the area of patients admitted for medical conditions, providing care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric populations. The Registered Nurse is accountable for patient and family education to assist in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. The RN is expected to promote comfort and provide emotional support in a Healing Environment.

Job Functions:

• Applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care.
• Assesses patient/family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data obtained through direct observation/assessment and health team communication.
• Creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant individualized plan of care to address identified health problems.
• In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and healthcare team members, sets goals and monitors patient progress.
• Adjusts the plan based on patient response or change in condition/reprioritization of needs.
• Promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient.
• Encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes.
• Teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individuals' education, training, and scope of practice.
• Motivates the patient/family by teaching them what is needed to continue care/healing at home.
• Assesses patient/family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding.
• Documents the education provided and the patient/family response to the education.
• Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and uses results from quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and care delivery.
• Engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas for professional development.
• Seeks to develop a helping, trusting, and caring relationship by being present, listening, communicating, engaging, and anticipating patient/family needs.
• Demonstrates skill in the application of interventions, including medication administration.

Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens is reasonably anticipated. Required tasks involve potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues.
