Description

American Traveler is seeking a Registered Nurse for a Med/Surg float pool position at a Level I trauma center, requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg or ICU experience.

Details

  • Staff Float Pool MedSurg position within a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology units
  • Patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Night shift schedule, 7:00pm to 7:00am, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
  • EMR is Cerner, with EPIC experience also considered
  • Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Floating required to like units based on patient population and unit type
  • No on-call requirements
  • Weekend rotation required, either every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling

Requirements

  • Active RN license in Alabama or compact license required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner EMR experience required for candidates with strictly ICU experience
  • Skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, foley catheter management, and central line dressing changes depending on unit assignment
  • Chemotherapy administration certification preferred for MedSurg/Oncology unit assignment
  • Telemetry experience preferred and should be disclosed if applicable

Additional Information

  • Assist with patient turning, bathing, and ADLs as part of standard care expectations
  • CNA support available at a 1:10-12 ratio for vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks
  • Unit support includes receptionist/HUC, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
  • New facility travelers or those returning after 1+ years will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours of unit orientation
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Facility-designated blackout dates apply to requested time off throughout the year
  • Up to 7 days of time off can be approved in advance, excluding blackout dates
  • Scrub color is unrestricted
  • Parking available in designated deck levels at no cost
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this position
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility, as local candidates are not accepted
  • Previous staff must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before returning as a traveler
