About the Position

This position involves working a 48-hour work week with overtime eligible after 48 hours worked in a week.

Facility Information

Located in a major city, this facility is a Level II Trauma Center and has a Level IV NICU.

Unit Overview

  • L&D Beds: 34
  • Labor Rooms: 15
  • Antepartum Rooms: 12
  • OB Emergency Department: 4
  • Operating Rooms: 3
  • Postpartum Beds: 18

Patient Population

The unit services high acuity patients, including:

  • Hypertension
  • Magnesium administration
  • C-sections (33% rate)
  • Preterm labor
  • Insulin drips (rarely)
  • Vaginal deliveries
  • Epidurals
  • Inductions
  • Robust antepartum care
  • Prior rupture of membranes (PROM)
  • Multiple births
  • Postpartum hemorrhage

The unit expects full recovery support for both birthing patients and newborns.

Patient Ratios

  • 1:1 for active labor
  • 1:2 for non-active laboring
  • 1:2-3 antepartum (depending on acuity)

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • NRP
  • Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) - AWHONN

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience in high acuity labor management
  • Ability to triage OB patients
  • Experience circulating in the operating room
  • Capability to perform cervical checks and interpret fetal monitoring strips
  • Support as a second set of hands for newborn delivery and recovery

Support on the Unit

Unit support includes:

  • CNA for patient assistance and transport
  • Scrub Techs (LPN with NRP certification)
  • Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator
  • Charge nurse support
  • Phlebotomy services
  • In-house resource RN (dependent on staffing)
  • Scheduled break nurses
  • RT available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries
  • Laborist coverage
  • Residents and fellows present

Technology and Equipment

  • Electronic Medical Records (EMR): EPIC required
  • IV Pumps: Alaris CareFusion
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
  • Fetal Surveillance Monitors: Centricity/Qx
  • Epidural Pumps: CAD Solaris
  • Panda Warmers
  • Coviden Sequential Compression Devices (SCD)

Orientation and Scheduling

Orientation includes hospital training and a two-week unit orientation followed by one week of independent practice. Scheduling is done in 6-week increments with shifts primarily during the day.

Holiday and Time Off Policy

Holidays will be scheduled fairly across the team. Time-off requests should be submitted prior to contract approval.
