Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Overview

This position requires a dedicated Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to work 4 shifts of 12 hours each week, totaling 48 hours. Overtime is applicable after 48 hours worked in a week. The role involves providing high-quality care for patients in a challenging, fast-paced environment.

Facility Information

Located in Tacoma, WA, this facility serves as a Level II Trauma Center and features a Level IV NICU.

Unit Information

  • Labor & Delivery Beds: 34 total (15 labor rooms, 12 antepartum, 4 OB ED, 3 OR)
  • Post Partum Beds: 18
  • Patient Volume: Up to 300 deliveries per month

Patient Care Responsibilities

The Labor and Delivery RN will manage a variety of high-acuity patient types, including but not limited to:

  • Hypertension
  • Administration of magnesium
  • C-sections (33% rate)
  • Preterm labor
  • Insulin drips
  • Vaginal deliveries and inductions
  • Post-partum hemorrhage management

The RN is expected to ensure full recovery for both the birthing patient and newborn following vaginal births or C-sections.

Patient Ratios

In accordance with AWHONN guidelines, the patient-to-nurse ratios are:

  • 1:1 for active labor
  • 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
  • 1:2-3 for antepartum patients, depending on acuity

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) Certification (AWHONN)

Qualifications

Candidates should possess:

  • High acuity experience in labor management and delivery of high-risk obstetric patients
  • The ability to triage obstetric patients and circulate in the operating room
  • Skill in cervical checks and interpretation of fetal monitoring strips
  • Competence as a second set of hands during newborn procedures when needed

Unit Support and Resources

The unit is supported by:

  • 1 CNA who assists with transports, restocking, and room clean-up
  • Scrub Techs (LPNs with NRP certification)
  • A Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)
  • A free-floating Charge Nurse
  • Phlebotomy services
  • Break Nurses (2 scheduled per shift)
  • Respiratory Therapists available 24/7
  • Laborist on staff 24/7
  • Anesthesiologist during daytime hours, with shared coverage after hours

Orientation and Training

New hires will undergo a comprehensive orientation, including:

  • Preceptor training covering hospital orientation, and subsequently 2 weeks on the unit followed by 1 week of independent practice
  • Standardized orientation for Charge Nurses

Scheduling and Time Off

The schedule operates in 6-week increments, with shifts typically from:

  • 0700 to 1930
  • 1900 to 0730

This position requires a weekend rotation, with every other weekend mandatory. The time off requests should be submitted prior to contract approval, with discussions for incidental days off with the Charge Nurse or Manager.
