Facility Overview

Located in Puyallup, WA, this is a Level III Trauma Center equipped with 375 licensed beds.

Unit Information

• 9 Labor and Delivery Rooms
• 2 OB Operating Rooms
• 2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units
• 11 Level II NICU Beds
• 4 Pediatric Beds
• 20-bed Mother/Baby Unit
• 18-bed START Unit for Perinatal Addiction
• 3 OB Emergency Department Beds (20 weeks and above)

The START Unit is an inpatient voluntary addiction medicine treatment program specifically designed for pregnant women seeking support for their addiction issues.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of 1 year of experience is required. First-time travelers are accepted.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

• Level II Perinatal Center for pregnancies at 32 weeks and above
• Common conditions: Hypertension, magnesium administration, substance abuse medication management
• Care includes antepartum monitoring and postpartum care
• Approximately 175-200 deliveries per month

Patient Ratios

Ratios follow AWHONN and NANN guidelines:

• 1:1 for active labor
• 1:2 for non-active laboring patients

Qualifications and Certifications

• Current BLS and NRP certifications
• Fetal monitoring certification (AWHONN or equivalent)

Required Skills

• Strong Labor and Delivery experience, including cervical exams and epidural management
• Proficient in antepartum and labor monitoring, amnio infusion, IV placements, and Pitocin administration
• Postpartum experience in supporting mother and baby care beyond the transition period
• Comfort with couplet care once both mother and baby are stable
• Familiarity with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing

Department Support

• No CNAs on the unit
• Surgical Technologist support available Monday through Friday
• Phlebotomy services provided
• NICU attendings are available for infants 34 weeks or less if needed
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries
• Hospitalist and Laborist (OBGYN) services available 24/7

Technology and Equipment

• EMR: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
• Monitoring Equipment: Standard labor and delivery monitors

Floating Policy

Nurses will only float to areas where they possess competency. Floating to the START unit is not permitted. Traditional travelers will float between Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby.

Orientation and Competency

Orientation includes NEO and completion of core competencies, including HIPAA and OSHA training, medication exams, and unit competency evaluations before arrival.

Scheduling and Shift Details

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend
• Shift times are from 0700 to 1900 or 1900 to 0700
• Holiday expectations: One major and one minor holiday
• Schedule cycle: Developed in three-week increments
