L&D Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

The unit includes 34 Labor & Delivery beds, comprising 15 labor rooms, 12 antepartum beds, 4 OB Emergency Department beds, and 3 Operating Rooms. Additionally, there are 18 Postpartum beds available for patient care.

Experience Requirements

  • 2 years of nursing experience required for L&D RN, with previous travel experience preferred. 5+ years is strongly favored.
  • Consideration for first-time travelers for the L&D RN role will be upon review.
  • ANM candidates must have 3 years of nursing experience and substantial Charge Nurse experience.

Patient Types

  • High acuity cases including hypertension, magnesium administration, C-sections (33% C-section rate), preterm labor, insulin drips, vaginal deliveries, epidurals, inductions, robust antepartum, PROM, multiple births, and postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Expected patient recovery after vaginal births and C-sections for both mother and baby.
  • Approximately 300 deliveries per month.

Patient Ratios

  • 1:1 ratio for active labor patients.
  • 1:2 ratio for non-active laboring patients.
  • 1:2-3 for antepartum care, depending on acuity levels.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Intermediate FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring, AWHONN)

Skills Required

  • Experience in managing high acuity labor delivery and care for high-risk OB patients.
  • Proficient in triaging OB patients, performing cervical checks, and reading/interpreting fetal monitoring strips.
  • Ability to assist with newborn care including receiving and recovering normal newborns when necessary.
  • ANM candidates must fulfill Charge Nurse responsibilities during their shifts and have experience in managing OB ED patients.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the capability to provide education and manage staff conflicts are essential.
  • EPIC experience is required.

Unit Support

  • CNA support available for transport, restocking, OR assistance, and room clean-up.
  • NRP certified Scrub Techs on duty.
  • Receptionist/HUC support present.
  • Free floating Charge Nurse support.
  • Resource RN availability pending staffing circumstances.
  • Two scheduled Break Nurses per shift.
  • 24/7 RT support, particularly for high-risk deliveries.
  • Laborist available around the clock.
  • In-house residents/fellows provide additional support.

Technology and Equipment

  • EMR system: EPIC required.
  • IV pumps: Alaris CareFusion.
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis.
  • Fetal surveillance monitors: Centricity/Qx.
  • Epidural pumps: CAD Solaris.
  • Panda warmers and Coviden SCDs available.

Floating

  • Possible floating to antepartum (within Labor & Delivery) and postpartum (4th floor), depending on scope and experience.
  • No floating is required for ANM roles.

Orientation

  • Participants will undergo hospital orientation and 2 weeks of unit training, followed by 1 week of independent practice, starting 3 weeks ahead of residents arriving.
  • ANM candidates will complete 6 shifts of unit orientation, paired with a Charge Nurse.

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation involves every other weekend, but may vary based on staffing needs.
  • Holidays are to be worked fairly and equitably, with opportunities for ANM to pick up shifts if necessary.
