Registered Nurse (RN) - Labor and Delivery

Unit Overview

This position is located in a Birthing Center/Mother Baby unit that includes:

• 13 Labor and Delivery (L&D) Beds
• 2 Operating Room (OR) Suites for C-Sections
• 2 Triage Beds
• 14 Postpartum Beds

The unit averages 170-190 births per month, with a total of 2,104 deliveries in 2025.

Patient Care Information

The unit follows AWHONN guidelines for nurse-patient ratios:

• 1:2 in Labor and Delivery
• 1:3-4 for couplet care

Common patient diagnoses include:

• High-risk pregnancies
• Preeclampsia
• Diabetic conditions
• Psychosocial issues
• Positive substance use screening

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring preferred

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess the following experience and skills:

• Minimum of 2 years of LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
• Ability to independently attend deliveries and circulate during C-sections
• Comfortable with assisting in newborn delivery and transitioning
• Experience in titrating drips, including Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin

Staffing and Support

The unit includes:

• One surgical tech available 24/7
• Patient care assistant with clerical duties on each shift

OB hospitalists and a Neonatologist are in-house 24/7 to assist with patient triage and emergencies. Anesthesia providers are also available round-the-clock.

Equipment and Monitoring

The unit is equipped with:

• Respiratory therapy equipment, including vents, CPAP, and BiPAP
• EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) System with Centricity-perinatal

Monitor Technicians are present, and RNs are required to read their own strips.

Scheduling and Requirements

Shifts and scheduling are organized as follows:

• Block scheduling is available upon request
• Weekend requirements: Every other weekend, with day and night shifts
• Holidays are rotated with permanent staff
• Standby response time is 45 minutes

Traveling nurses are expected to function in both Mother Baby and Postpartum units as well as complete routine competencies.

Orientation and Training

The training includes:

• An 8-hour day for compliance with the unit-based educator
• An 8-hour EPIC class
• 2-3 shifts (12 hours) for unit-specific training
