Registered Nurse (RN) - Labor and Delivery

Unit Information

The unit consists of the following:

• Number of Beds: 9 LDRP beds, 1 OBED bed, 4 NICU beds, 1 OR suite
• Patient Ratios:
  • 1:1 for active labors, inductions, and C-sections
  • 1:3 for couplet care
  • 1:1 for newborns until stable
  • 1:3 for NICU intermediate care
• No techs or unit secretaries available

Equipment and Documentation

• CPN Central monitoring
• IV pumps
• Infant warmers
• Tele-med robot for neonatologists
• Bili-blankets
• PCA pumps

Documentation is conducted using Meditech and CPN systems.

Scheduling and Staffing

Full-time schedule requires 3 shifts per week with rotating weekends and holidays. PRN staff may be called in as needed. Regular staff are expected to float within the facility, and some may be cross-trained to float between Labor and Delivery and NICU.

Patient Experience and Safety

All staff are required to conduct daily rounding on patients, including safety rounding.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must possess the following skills and experience:

• Labor and delivery experience, with the ability to assist in labor and recovery, as well as newborn assessment
• Experience handling shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, and other obstetric emergencies
• Advanced skills in fetal monitoring and experience with inductions (Pitocin, Cervidil)

Procedures Performed

Common procedures performed on the unit include:

• C-sections
• Circumcisions
• Intra-uterine monitoring
• Assisted deliveries using vacuum or forceps

Certifications Required

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• Fetal Monitoring Training

Dress Code

Staff are required to wear pink and/or brown scrubs in accordance with the infant security policy for the unit.

Team and Resources

The unit comprises a team of experienced nurses, many of whom have approximately 30 years of experience. In addition, several staff members have been with the unit for 7-10 years, ensuring a wealth of knowledge and support for new hires. The collaborative environment encourages teamwork, making it an excellent opportunity to gain experience in labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care.
