Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Radiologic Technologist
Definition of Position
The Interventional Radiology/Cardiology Radiologic Technologist supports diagnostic and interventional procedures through the expert operation of fluoroscopic imaging equipment, sterile technique, and coordination of procedural workflows. This role collaborates with physicians, nurses, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The technologist demonstrates advanced technical competence in procedural imaging, radiation safety, sterile field maintenance, and hemodynamic monitoring while adhering to departmental protocols and regulatory standards. Professional judgment is exercised during the performance of services, maintaining a demeanor that aligns with medical ethics.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates fluoroscopic and radiographic imaging systems during diagnostic and interventional procedures, ensuring optimal image quality and equipment functionality.
- Maintains strict adherence to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles and radiation safety policies.
- Functions as a scrub technologist when assigned, employing sterile techniques to assist physicians during procedures.
- Prepares and organizes necessary sterile instruments, anticipating physician needs and responding rapidly during critical moments.
- Acts as the primary monitor technologist, documenting hemodynamic data and communicating real-time findings to the procedural team.
- Assists with patient preparation and positioning, verifies allergies, and ensures proper patient identification and procedure verification.
- Participates in pre-procedure discussions regarding contrast allergies or sensitivities, ensuring effective communication during the timeout.
- Assists in managing supplies, ensuring proper room turnover efficiency and functionality of all equipment.
- Tracks and reports equipment issues and assists with documentation related to radiation dose metrics and service needs.
- Works independently, making evaluations and decisions based on measurable or verifiable criteria.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Required: Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
- Preferred: BS in Radiologic Science/Medical Imaging.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Required: Current licensure from the relevant state authority and ARRT certification (RT(R)).
- Current BLS and ACLS certification (or within 6 months of hire) are required; additional certifications specific to the areas of clinical specialty are preferred.
- Experience:
- Required: At least one year of experience in Interventional Radiology and/or Cath Lab.
- Preferred: At least three years managing fluoroscopy and scrubbing interventional cases.
- Ability to provide care that respects patients' age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial needs.
- Bilingual and/or English-Spanish speaking skills are preferred.
