ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
General Information
This position requires a skilled ICU Registered Nurse to join a mixed unit with 39 beds, encompassing MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU. Floating to CVICU is only permissible for those with specialized experience in that unit.
Minimum Experience
- 2 years of ICU experience (excluding travel experience) preferred.
- 1.5 years of ICU experience may be considered with significant RN experience outside of ICU upon management approval.
- First-time travelers will not be accepted.
- Travelers must reside 100 miles away from any facility.
- Permanent staff must wait one year before returning as a traveler.
Patient Types
The ideal candidate will manage a variety of complex ICU patients, including:
- Surgical cases
- Medical conditions
- Cardiac issues (preferred)
- Neuro and trauma patients
Common diagnoses include:
- ARDS
- MI
- CVA/TIA
- COVID-19
- Post-cardiac catheterization
- Post-surgical care
- Multiple system trauma
Patient Ratios
Ratios may vary based on acuity, typically ranging from 1:1 to occasionally 1:3.
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIHSS
- TNCC (required; travelers must obtain this certification prior to arrival)
Required Education
The candidate must have completed a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing and hold a Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Dakota.
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with Epic charting system is required.
- Must be comfortable working a 48-hour work week. Candidates not interested in this commitment must seek manager approval.
- Experience with specified patient types is required.
- Ability to administer IV medications (including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics), manage hemodynamic lines, carry out proning, and conduct ventilator management.
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.
Candidates should be prepared to discuss instances where they exceeded leadership expectations.
Support on the Unit
- CNA support includes 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit, along with a mobility float aide.
- Charge nurse coverage consists of 2 CRNs overseeing all ICUs.
- Phlebotomy services are available for peripheral blood draws only.
- ICU CRNs place all midlines.
- Resource nurses are available as staffing allows.
- Respiratory Therapy services are available 24/7.
- There are 3 Intensivists on day shifts and 2 on night shifts, along with APP support at night.
Orientation and Scheduling
- Orientation includes 1 day for hospital orientation, 1 day for department-specific orientation and iLearns, and 2-3 shifts for floor orientation depending on experience.
- Weekend rotation is typically every other weekend but is not guaranteed.
- No time off is permitted during the holiday season or during special events like the Sturgis Bike Rally.
- Time off requests are allowed for up to 7 days, but must align with full 13-week contracts.
