General Information

Position involves floating within various Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Progressive Care Units (PCUs), and emergency departments. A minimum of one year of ICU experience is required. First-time travelers with strong ICU and float pool experience are welcome.

Patient Types Expected to Care For

  • COVID-19 Patients
  • Neuro, Trauma, Medical, Surgical
  • Sepsis, Pneumonia, DKA, DTs
  • Multi-system Failure, Spinal Injuries
  • Pre/Post Catheterization Patients (Radial Approach)
  • General Surgery Patients
  • Respiratory Compromise, CHF, COPD
  • Gunshot Wounds, Stabbings, Motor Vehicle Accidents
  • Strokes, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Various Back Surgeries

CVICU Responsibilities

  • Post-operative care for CABG, Esophagectomy, TAVR, AAA repair, Thoracic and Vascular surgeries, and Post-arrest patients.

Travelers Not Expected to Care For

  • Fresh CABG/TAVR, EVDs, Post TPA
  • Devices such as ECMO, IABP, Impella, and those on Hypothermia Protocol

Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1:2
  • PCU/CCU: 1:4
  • Emergency Holding: Same ratio based on patient’s level of care

Certifications Required

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • NIHSS

Required Skills

  • Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation
  • Ventilator and BiPAP Management
  • Invasive Line Management
  • Ostomy, General Drains, Tracheostomy, Chest Tubes, Lumbar Drains
  • IV Medication Titration

Support on the Unit

  • Charge Nurse
  • Hospitalist, Respiratory Therapist, and Intensivist available 24/7
  • Cardiologist on call 24/7 for CVICU and CCU Cardiac Short Stay

Charting System

Epic experience is required.

Scheduling

Schedules are typically made for three weeks at a time and issued 7-10 days prior. Availability for every other weekend is expected, with the potential for back-to-back weekends (rare). Self-scheduling is not available, and no guarantee of a patterned schedule can be provided.

Time Off

Time off exceeding five days requires manager approval.

Floating Requirements

Travelers may float to the following units:

  • Neuro/Trauma/Medical/Cardiac ICU
  • CCU (Cardiac Step Down)
  • PCU/ACC
  • Emergency Holding
  • Medical-Surgical Units
  • Any open surge areas related to the above units

There is a possibility for travel to nearby facilities if needed, though this is not common. Advanced notification will be provided if required.

Orientation

  • 1 day of general hospital orientation
  • 1 day of unit-specific orientation (12 hours) on the ICU unit
  • 1 additional day of 12 hours on similar units

Additional Requirements

Telemetry competency is required and must be completed and passed prior to the start of the position. Compliance will be responsible for grading this exam.
