Travel ICU RN – Sacramento, CA
Shift: 12-hour Nights
Schedule: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Weekend: Every other weekend
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week
Contract: 91 weeks
Unit: ICU – 8 beds
EMR: Cerner
Position Overview
This is an 8-bed ICU caring for a general medical/surgical critical-care population. The unit has 1:1–1:2 ratios and travelers are the first to float.
Required Certifications
- BLS – AHA
- ACLS – AHA
- NIHSS
- 2 years ICU experience
- Active license required at submission
Patient Population
Common diagnoses include:
- Respiratory failure
- COPD
- CHF
- DKA
- Stable CVA post-TPA
- Medical/surgical critical-care patients
- Manual proning
No CABG or neurosurgery.
Clinical Skills
- Must be comfortable reading and interpreting EKG/cardiac rhythms
- Ventilator experience required
- Ventilators include Galileo and G5
- Experience with critically ill medical/surgical patients
Schedule & Floating
- 12-hour night shifts: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
- Every other weekend
- Travelers are first to float
- May float to other Sacramento-area facilities
- Block scheduling generally not available
- Self-scheduling is used but finalized by the manager
- Extra shifts and shift trades may be available
- May be placed on call if the ICU does not need the traveler
- OT/extra shifts may be available
Unit Details
- 8 ICU beds
- Ratio: 1:1–1:2
- Charge nurse generally does not take a patient assignment but provides break relief
- No ICU nurse aides
- RT available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- Intensivist/hospitalist is not in-house; Telemed is utilized
- Floor orientation: 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
- Bedside report
Scrubs
- Navy blue
- Undershirts: navy, white, or black
- Scrub jacket: optional, but must be navy
Important Submission Requirements
- 2 supervisory references from the modality being submitted
- Charge RN is acceptable
- 1 reference must be within the last 12 months
- 1 reference must be within the last 3 years
- Copy of driver’s license required at submission to validate legal name
- Pulse profile must match the government-issued ID exactly
- No middle initial or middle name if it does not appear on the ID
- Candidate cannot have been directly employed by a CommonSpirit/CHI/Dignity facility within the past year
- PRN employment through an outside staffing firm may still be considered
Mandatory Dysrhythmia Exam
Before signing, the candidate must complete the Relias Dysrhythmia Exam.
- Must be completed within 24–48 hours
- Pass/fail exam
- 2 attempts allowed
- Test A is assigned first
- If Test A is failed, Test B is assigned for the second attempt
- Screenshot showing the number of attempts is required
- If the candidate fails both attempts, they will be DNU for CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento
Other Requirements
- License must be active and available for submission
- BSN not required
- Hospital may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment
- Travelers participate in the holiday rotation with core staff
- RTO should be discussed during submission
Best candidate: ICU RN with 2+ years of medical/surgical ICU experience, Cerner experience, strong EKG interpretation and ventilator skills, and BLS/ACLS/NIHSS. The candidate must also be comfortable floating and completing the Relias dysrhythmia exam immediately.
