Join a leading acute-care hospital as an RN in the ICU. This facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center and a teaching hospital, equipped with 637 licensed beds and specialized in various critical care services. As an ICU RN, you will provide high-quality care to patients with complex medical conditions.

Unit Information:

  • Beds: 14
  • Minimum Years of Experience required: 2 years ICU RN experience
  • First-time travelers are welcome.

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:

  • Medical ICU patients
  • Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, renal failure, sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, hypotension, hypertension, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, ARDS, and overdoses.
  • Management of chronic ventilators and trachs, as well as hemodynamically unstable patients requiring invasive monitoring and close observation.

Patient Ratios:

  • RN: 1:1-2 (rarely but possibly 3)
  • CNA: 1-2 per shift

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • NIHSS, BLS, and ACLS certification required
  • CCRN (Critical Care Nursing Certification) preferred but not required

Skills Required:

  • Trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips
  • Management of vasoactive medications
  • Monitoring and management of invasive lines (arterial lines, central venous lines, pulse oximetry, intracranial pressure monitoring)
  • Assistance and management of bedside procedures (chest tube placement/management, tracheostomy, PEG tube placement)
  • Management of patients on ventilator support

Support within the Department:

  • CNA duties include assisting with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, hourly rounding, and transporting patients.
  • Unit secretary available from 7A-11P; house-wide call secretary from 11P-7A.
  • Charge nurse may have patients.
  • Resource nurses available, including discharge nurses and a resource team that floats to all units.
  • RT, hospitalists, and intensivists available 24/7.

Technology/Equipment:

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Med dispensing: Pyxis
  • Monitors: Phillips
  • Unit-specific equipment includes VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova Glucose Stat Strips, Belmont Rapid Infuser, TABLO, PCA pain management, and SCDs.

Orientation:

  • 1-day orientation with educational modules
  • 2 days departmental orientation

  • Scrub Color: Navy for RNs
