  • Patient Population: All age groups, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
  • Department Profile: Approximately 32 rooms, 36 beds, and 90 visits per day
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:4, with up to 1:5 for lower-acuity assignments
  • Floating: Within the Emergency Department specialty and to nearby regional ED locations as needed
  • Orientation: 24 hours

Emergency Department RN Job Requirements

  • Active Maryland RN license or compact RN license at the time of submission
  • At least 2 years of Emergency Department or Emergency Room nursing experience
  • Previous charge nurse experience required
  • Community hospital experience required
  • Experience caring for an average assignment of approximately four patients
  • Epic electronic health record (EHR) charting experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, and CPI certifications
  • NRP and TNCC certifications preferred
  • Strong emergency nursing skills across adult and pediatric populations
  • Ability to float within scope of practice and work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Flu vaccination required

Emergency Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide timely, compassionate emergency nursing care to patients with a wide range of emergent, complex, and multisystem diagnoses.
  • Perform triage, focused assessments, reassessments, and ongoing monitoring for patients across the lifespan.
  • Recognize and respond to high-acuity conditions, including stroke, STEMI, seizures, respiratory infections, drug overdose, acute psychosis, suicidal behavior, and multisystem organ dysfunction.
  • Manage patients requiring ventilator care, BiPAP/CPAP, IV vasopressors, continuous sedation, IV paralytics, chest tube care, central line management, and procedural sedation monitoring.
  • Interpret dysrhythmias and arterial blood gases, obtain 12-lead ECGs, initiate emergency interventions, and administer emergency medications.
  • Start and maintain IV access, perform phlebotomy, administer blood products, and maintain appropriate isolation and PPE practices.
  • Support airway management and resuscitation efforts, including intubation assistance and care of critically ill patients.
  • Apply splints, provide wound and injury care, and assist with treatment of abdominal pain, asthma, hyperglycemia, sickle cell crisis, and other urgent conditions.
  • Provide safe care for patients experiencing mental or behavioral health conditions, psychiatric holds, violent behavior, neglect, or abuse concerns.
  • Collaborate with respiratory therapy, radiology, pharmacy, social services, physical therapy, interpretation services, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgment, prioritize competing demands, and maintain accurate documentation in Epic.
  • Participate in charge responsibilities and help promote safe, efficient patient flow in a high-volume Emergency Department.
