Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position requiring 2+ years of ER experience and TNCC certification at a Level III trauma, STEMI and Stroke receiving facility.

Details

  • Level III trauma center that is also a STEMI and Stroke receiving facility
  • 18-bed ER including 4 critical care rooms used for trauma or codes, plus a 6-bed Fast Track
  • Separate triage area with travelers allowed to staff it
  • ER holds are intermixed with standard ER patients
  • 1 dedicated psych/seclusion room with 24/7 in-house security rounding in the ER
  • Average of 70 patients treated per day
  • Nurse to patient ratio of 1:3-4 depending on acuity
  • Patient population includes pediatrics, cardiac/STEMI, stroke, some trauma (multisystem trauma transferred out), and general ER complaints such as abdominal pain, respiratory, and GI issues
  • Common drips administered include pressors and sedation
  • 24/7 in-house MD coverage plus 2 midlevels staggered during busy times
  • Generally patient-free charge nurse on each shift
  • 2 PCTs per shift, who may occasionally be pulled for sitter duties
  • RT present in the ER 24/7 performing ABGs, breathing treatments, and running vents; RNs perform EKGs and troubleshoot RT equipment ranging from nasal cannula to vents
  • RNs are required to read and interpret their own telemetry strips as there are no monitor techs
  • X-Ray and CT located near the ER with staff assistance for transport
  • Phlebotomy team draws labs
  • 12-hour night shifts using Meditech EMR
  • Requires every other weekend
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Travelers are typically first to float if floating is needed, otherwise floating is uncommon

Requirements

  • Active TX RN license or compact license in hand
  • Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), NIHSS, PALS (AHA), and TNCC
  • Minimum 2 years of ER nursing experience required
  • Must pass the Advanced Dysrhythmia exam (83% or higher) prior to signing contract, with up to three attempts allowed
  • Copy of driver's license required at time of consideration, with legal name matching government-issued ID (no middle initial or middle name)
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including employment dates and rehire eligibility

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care in a high-volume Emergency Department treating a wide range of acuities and diagnoses
  • May be asked to precept as needed by the unit
  • RNs are not responsible for arranging placement for psych patients; a separate team screens and sets up placement
  • Unit-specific orientation consists of 1-3 shifts depending on experience, with a checkoff packet reviewed alongside a preceptor
  • Dress code requires navy scrubs with navy undershirts; scrub jackets are optional but must also be navy
  • Call-offs are strongly discouraged and could result in termination
