Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse to join our dynamic team in a busy clinical setting. This unit houses 32 beds with an average daily census of 90-110 patients. A minimum of 2 years of emergency department experience is required for traditional travelers, while candidates with comprehensive advanced practice experience may possess at least 4 years.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

Candidates will encounter a diverse patient population, including:

  • General ED complaints
  • Abdominal pain
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath (SOB)
  • Behavioral health (BH) patients
  • Geriatric patients
  • Occasional pediatric cases

Patient Ratios

The typical patient-to-nurse ratio is:

  • Registered Nurse (RN): 1:4
  • Patient Care Technician (PCT): 1:6-12

Required Licenses and Certifications

All candidates must possess the following credentials:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) 12 or CPIS (Crisis Prevention Institute Specialized)

Skills Required

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in general ED skills and possess strong soft skills, including:

  • Team collaboration
  • Organizational skills
  • Effective communication
  • Time management

Support within the Department

The emergency department is supported by:

  • PCT
  • Receptionist/HUC (Health Unit Coordinator) available 24/7
  • Charge nurse (will not take patients)
  • Phlebotomy staff available 24/7
  • Hospitalists on duty 24/7
  • ED doctors and mid-level providers
  • Lab draws conducted by phlebotomy staff, nurses, and techs

Technology and Equipment

The emergency department utilizes the following equipment:

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation

New staff will undergo a structured orientation program, which includes:

  • General hospital orientation
  • 1-2 shifts on the unit, followed by 2-3 independent shifts to acclimate to the facility
  • Comprehensive training in unit flow prior to pairing with a resident

Scheduling

The typical schedule includes a weekend rotation every other week. Additional holiday coverage may be required as needed by the unit. Time-off requests (RTO) may be approved for up to 7 days, with additional days subject to manager approval.

Available shifts are as follows:

  • 0600-1830
  • 0900-2130
  • 1100-2330
  • 1200-0000
  • 1500-0330
  • 1800-0630

Scrubs in any color are acceptable, and free parking is available for all staff.
