General Information
- Beds: 21 beds, 8 hallway, 5 fast track, 4-12 outpatient overflow beds (secondary fast track)
- Years of Experience Required: 2 years in the Emergency Department
- First-time Travelers: Accepted
Patient Population
This position involves caring for a diverse patient population, including:
- Geriatric patients
- Patients with abdominal pain
- Patients with chest pain
- Stroke patients
- Psychiatric patients
- Respiratory patients
- 15% pediatric patients
Patient Ratios
The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, organized in pods where 8 patients are assigned to 3 nurses.
Required Skills
- TNK administration
- Conscious sedation
- Chest tube management
- Central line placement
Licensure & Certifications
The following certifications and licenses are required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- CPI or MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute or Managing Outburst and Aggression)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Support on the Unit
Staff support includes:
- Technicians with phlebotomy licenses (3 on day shifts, 3 on night shifts, and 1 on 1-1)
- Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator available 24/7
- Charge Nurse available 24/7
- ER Technicians are all phlebotomy certified, with laboratory services accessible 24/7
- IV/VAT team available M-F 8-4:30, with many ER nurses trained in ultrasound-guided IV placement
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Hospitalist coverage available 24/7
- Telemetry monitoring available at both bedside and the nurse’s station
Technology & Equipment
- EMR System: EPIC (required)
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Orientation
Orientation is one week long and includes:
- New Employee Orientation
- EPIC training
- Skills check-off
- General site check-off
- Position-specific check-off
- 2-3 precepted shifts
Scheduling
Shift details include:
- Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
- Holiday Expectations: 1 holiday per contract
- Approval of Requests for Time Off (RTO): Up to 7 days may be approved
- Shift Times:
- Days: 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-7p
- Mids: 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, 1-1, 3-3, 4p-2a
- Nights: 7p-7a
- Schedule Cycle: 6 weeks
