Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

Location: Puyallup, WA

Type: Level III Trauma Center

  • Total Licensed Beds: 375
  • Emergency Department Beds: 46 (including 5 dedicated Safe Psych rooms)
  • Average Daily Patient Volume: 200 patients

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of Emergency Department experience required.
  • First-time travelers are welcome.

Patient Types

Experience with a wide range of patient demographics and conditions including:

  • Pediatrics to geriatrics
  • Trauma, Gunshot Wounds (GSW), Sepsis
  • COVID-19, STEMI, Stroke, DKA
  • Mental health issues
  • Respiratory problems
  • Adult Psych patients
  • High-acuity medical cases
  • High geriatric patient population (falls, STEMI)

Patient Ratios

Day Shift Ratios: 1 RN: 4-5 Patients (flexibility based on acuity and staffing needs)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Institute / Management of Assaultive Behavior)

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in general Emergency Department skills including cardiac rhythm interpretation and IV administration.
  • Experience with procedural sedation, blood administration, and cardiac medications.
  • Recent experience with EPIC electronic health records is mandatory.

Support on the Unit

  • Emergency Room Technicians for glucose checks and assistance with splinting.
  • Charge Nurse operates primarily in a leadership capacity, rarely taking patient assignments.
  • Resource and Float Nurse available 24/7.
  • ED Educator present for ongoing training and support.
  • Security provided around the clock for enhanced safety.
  • Social Work Services available in ED 24/7.
  • Pharmacy support available around the clock for medication management and assistance during codes.

Charting System and Equipment

  • EPIC for electronic health records (recent experience required).
  • Alaris infusion system and Pyxis for medication management.
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring available at the nursing station.

Orientation

  • First Day: New Employee Orientation (NEO), EPIC training (if needed), mental health area observation.
  • Second Day: 12-hour shift with assigned preceptor to gain hands-on experience.

Scheduling Information

Shifts:

  • Days/Mids: 0700, 1100
  • Mids/Nights: 1500, 1900

Schedules typically provided three weeks in advance, with notifications ten days prior to the start of the schedule. Weekend shifts will vary based on unit need.
