The Transportation Planning Coordinator serves as the primary support resource for Transportation Planning operations. This position is primarily responsible for Truck Builder functions, ensuring efficient trailer utilization, load optimization, and transportation execution. In addition, the role serves as the designated backup for Transportation Coordinator, Router, and Dispatcher positions to ensure uninterrupted transportation operations during vacations, absences, peak periods, and other business needs.

The Transportation Planning Coordinator works closely with Transportation, Warehouse, and Sales teams to support operational efficiency, customer service, and continuous improvement initiatives. This position reports directly to the Routing Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Truck Builder Functions

  • Utilize Truck Builder software to create and optimize trailer load configurations.
  • Maximize trailer cube utilization, weight distribution, safety, and unloading efficiency.
  • Analyze and modify load plans to improve operational performance and customer service.
  • Collaborate with warehouse operations to ensure successful execution of load plans.
  • Respond to load-related concerns and adjust plans as necessary.
  • Maintain Truck Builder software parameters and operational planning data.
  • Monitor opportunities for continuous improvement in transportation efficiency and trailer utilization.

Operations Coordination

  • Prepare and process transportation reports, route updates, delivery schedules, backhaul documentation, and operational records.
  • Collect, track, and maintain transportation performance metrics and departmental reporting.
  • Create and maintain spreadsheets, databases, charts, and reports for leadership review.
  • Support transportation leadership with administrative, compliance, and documentation activities.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries related to transportation operations.
  • Maintain accurate transportation records and operational documentation.

Routing Support

  • Provide routing coverage as required by operational needs.
  • Utilize routing software to schedule and sequence customer delivery routes.
  • Match customer orders with transportation capacity.
  • Balance trailer loads according to weight, cube, and customer requirements.
  • Develop efficient and cost-effective routes while maintaining service expectations.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Warehouse, and Transportation teams regarding delivery feasibility.
  • Maintain routing system parameters and support route optimization initiatives.

Dispatch Support

  • Provide dispatch coverage during vacations, absences, and peak operating periods.
  • Support driver, tractor, trailer, shuttle, and route assignments.
  • Monitor route execution and communicate service concerns to management.
  • Assist in resolving service issues through route reassignment and operational adjustments.
  • Support driver utilization of transportation technologies and Proof of Delivery systems.
  • Escalate customer service, equipment, or operational issues as appropriate.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated backup for Truck Builder, Transportation Coordinator, Router, and Dispatcher positions.
  • Support departmental cross-training initiatives.
  • Participate in process improvement projects and operational planning activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of experience in transportation, logistics, dispatch, routing, warehouse administration, or related operations.
  • Experience with Truck Builder, routing, dispatching, or transportation planning preferred but not fully required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Transportation and Logistics

  • Transportation planning and logistics knowledge.
  • Trailer load optimization and truck building proficiency.
  • Route planning and sequencing.
  • Transportation network and geographic territory knowledge.
  • Understanding of transportation efficiency and cost management principles.
  • Knowledge of DOT Hours of Service regulations preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Truck Builder software.
  • Routing software experience (RoadNet or equivalent preferred).
  • Omnitracs and Proof of Delivery systems knowledge preferred.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and other business software.
  • Ability to generate reports and analyze operational data.

Work Environment

  • This is a fully onsite position.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment within the Transportation Department.
  • Regular use of transportation software systems, computers, telephones, and reporting tools.
  • Occasional visits to warehouse and transportation operational areas may be required.
  • Remote and hybrid work arrangements are not available for this position.

Physical Requirements

This position is classified as a sedentary administrative role.

  • Frequent sitting and computer use.
  • Frequent keyboarding and data entry.
  • Occasional standing and walking.
  • No lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, or other physical labor requirements are considered essential job functions.

Compensation depends on relevant experience and/or education, specific skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law (for example: state minimum wage thresholds). The expected base rate for this role is between $18.18/hour and $30.30/hour.

As applicable, this role may also receive overtime compensation.
