Primary Purpose: The Transportation Mechanic/Technician Helper is responsible for performing and providing additional support for inspection and/or repair of district vehicles. Qualifications: Education/Certification:

• Must be 18 years old, high school diploma or GED
• Acceptable driving record in accordance with Texas DPS guidelines for school bus drivers
• Ability to obtain a Texas Commercial Driver's License with P and S endorsements within 6 months after employment start
• Pass annual DOT physical and drug screen and all other requirements of school bus drivers
• Must have the ability to clear a criminal background check

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Knowledge of basic bus automotive mechanics
• Knowledge of various Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to vehicle maintenance, inspection, and repair.
• Knowledge of tools, parts, procedures, technical skills, operating principals, and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of buses and equipment.
• Knowledge of public sector purchasing and procurement procedures
• Skill in inspecting equipment and diagnosing mechanical defects.
• Skill in working from drawings, specifications and other technical materials.
• Skill in diagnosing mechanical problems and having the correct repairs performed.
• Skill in scheduling preventive maintenance, inspections, and tire replacement on medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles
• Skill in comprehending and evaluating facts and problems associated with vehicle maintenance and repair; exercising sound judgment; and taking decisive and timely action in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• Skill in providing, utilizing, and understanding complex and technical information and explaining vehicle specifications and mechanical situations.
• Skill in gathering/organizing/analyzing/interpreting data, utilizing various techniques, applying concepts to assist in formulating conclusions and developing recommendations and solutions
• Skill in operating MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, utilizing tact and diplomacy.

Experience:

• Must possess the willingness and aptitude to learn to work in the general automotive repair and heavy volume automotive, trucking, or bus environment.
• Current training on auto/truck maintenance and repair systems. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  1. Perform basic mechanical repairs or work under supervision of a mechanic to repair or replace tires, bulbs, and accessories.
  2. Disassemble simple components and clean parts for re-assembly.
  3. Assist mechanic with all required duties such as repairs of district vehicle fleet and ordering of supplies, parts and record keeping.
  4. Inspect, repair, change, and rotate tires.
  5. Clean shop floors, stalls, driveways, tools, and equipment.
  6. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  7. Keep shop, equipment, and tools clean and in safe and efficient operating condition.
  8. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  9. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
  10. Respond to emergency road calls from drivers and tow vehicle if necessary.

      1. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.

      4. Assist in maintaining shop cleanliness, servicing equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
      5. Assists shop foreman in the operation of the maintenance shop including opening and closing facility as assigned.

      1. Follow federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in transportation area.
      2. Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents, required in transportation area.

      Equipment Used Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack, lift equipment, and operation and repair of school buses and district vehicles. This list is not inclusive and may be modified to fit the job assigned.
