Job Description

Perform engineering and design for overhead transmission line projects. Support projects from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, and closeout. Develop transmission line alignments, plan-and-profile drawings, structure spotting plans, and construction packages. Perform transmission line modeling and analysis using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER. Complete sag-tension, clearance, loading, and structural calculations. Design and analyze wood, steel, concrete, and lattice transmission structures. Evaluate structure loading, foundation reactions, conductor behavior, and line-clearance requirements. Select and specify conductors, shield wires, optical ground wires, insulators, hardware, structures, and foundations. Develop structure assemblies, framing details, attachment configurations, and material lists. Prepare engineering calculations, design criteria, technical specifications, reports, and bills of materials. Evaluate existing transmission lines and structures for rebuilds, reconductoring, capacity upgrades, and life-extension projects. Perform route evaluations and support transmission line routing and constructability reviews. Conduct site visits and field investigations to document existing conditions. Review survey, LiDAR, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, and right-of-way information. Coordinate with substation, civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, right-of-way, and project-management teams. Ensure designs comply with client standards, NESC requirements, applicable codes, and industry practices. Perform quality-control reviews of calculations, models, drawings, and construction documents. Review vendor drawings, contractor submittals, requests for information, and field-change requests. Support procurement activities and evaluate technical bids for transmission line materials. Provide engineering support during construction, installation, testing, and energization. Participate in client meetings, design reviews, project updates, and technical presentations. Track engineering scope, schedule, budget, risks, and project deliverables. Identify design conflicts, project risks, and constructability concerns and recommend practical solutions. Coordinate with utilities, landowners, contractors, vendors, and regulatory stakeholders as required. Support proposal preparation, project estimates, schedules, and scope development. Mentor junior engineers and designers as experience permits.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Transmission Line Engineer should have: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university. Experience supporting overhead transmission line engineering or related utility infrastructure projects. Familiarity with transmission line design principles, structure analysis, conductor mechanics, and applicable clearance requirements. Working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code and relevant industry standards. Ability to develop and review technical calculations, drawings, specifications, and reports. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate with engineering, project-management, construction, and client teams. Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines. Willingness to travel periodically for site visits, field investigations, and client meetings.
