Transit Fleet Maintenance Technician - Mass Transit Department

This class performs specialized repairs and maintenance on ECAT buses and BCC vehicles.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs vehicle maintenance to the ECAT standards

Diagnoses all phases of vehicle and equipment repair

Removes, cleans, repairs, reinstalls, and adjusts vehicle components (engine emission components, driveline components, electrical/electronic components, brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust, cab/chassis, and hydraulics)

Ensures work orders are completed accurately

Selects appropriate course of action for repairs

Evaluates completed work prior to release and seeks supervisor approval, where required

Performs road calls and emergency services, as necessary

Moves vehicles safely between job and work area

Communicates professionally with customers, team members, and supervisors

Actively participates in safety or educational training, as required

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

TYPICAL QUALIFCATION

Training and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by vehicle maintenance course work and one year of experience in light, medium, or heavy duty truck and/or bus maintenance; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement

Must be able to obtain the passenger endorsement and 608-609 A/C Certification within the first 90 days of employment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):

routine repair procedures applicable to gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles used for public transportation

preventive maintenance practices and procedures

workplace health and safety regulations

hand and power tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles

basic recordkeeping practices

performing routine and preventive maintenance duties on gasoline and diesel-powered mass transit vehicles

taking instruction and direction from higher level mechanics

operating tools and equipment typically used in vehicle maintenance

responding to break-downs and making repairs in the field

maintaining clean and orderly work areas communication

and interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Emergency Management Responsibilities:

During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
