Position Title: Transit Driver - CATS

Job Class Code: 7015

Department: Clovis Area Transit System (CATS)

Reports To: Operations Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Annual Salary: $34,379 - $51,568

Job Summary

Performs skilled work operating transit vehicles to transport passengers in a safe, reliable, and courteous manner. Provides public transportation services in accordance with established routes or dispatch instructions while ensuring compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), State, and City regulations.

Typical Duties

Vehicle Operation & Passenger Transport

  • Operates buses, vans, or other transit vehicles over designated routes or dispatched services
  • Ensures safe boarding, transport, and unloading of passengers
  • Assists passengers with special needs, including mobility assistance

Safety & Compliance

  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports deficiencies
  • Complies with DOT, NMDOT, and City safety regulations
  • Maintains required certifications and attends mandatory safety training

Customer Service

  • Provides courteous and professional service to passengers
  • Maintains a respectful and supportive environment
  • Responds appropriately to passenger concerns and situations

Documentation & Recordkeeping

  • Maintains accurate driver logs, trip records, and fare documentation
  • Collects and records fares in accordance with procedures

Vehicle Care & Maintenance

  • Performs light preventative maintenance and ensures cleanliness of vehicles
  • Reports mechanical issues and maintenance needs

Operational Support

  • Assists with dispatch operations when needed
  • Supports department operations through additional duties

Other Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid New Mexico driver's license
  • New Mexico Class C CDL with passenger endorsement (or ability to obtain)
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Additional certifications as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • City streets, routes, and transit operations
  • DOT regulations and safety procedures

Skills in:

  • Safe vehicle operation
  • Customer service and communication
  • Basic vehicle inspection and maintenance

Abilities to:

  • Operate transit vehicles safely under varying conditions
  • Assist passengers with diverse needs
  • Maintain accurate records and logs
  • Communicate effectively with passengers and staff

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting, standing, walking, and operating transit vehicles for extended periods. May involve assisting passengers and lifting up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work includes varying shifts, including evenings and weekends. Requires operation of transit vehicles in traffic and varying weather conditions. Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing.
