    Description

    Transducer Design Engineer

    POSITION SUMMARY:

The Transducer Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development and documentation of piezo-electric transducers and associated products. Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a subsystem design and manufacturing environment to develop sonar transmitters and receivers, primarily for U.S. Navy applications. Develop new, or modify existing, transducers for use in space-, weight-, and/or power-limited subsystems. Perform lab and at-sea testing on SONAR subsystems as part of the design verification and qualification process. Prepare and present reports and briefings for internal and external audiences.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Design new piezo-electric transducers for Sonatech's underwater acoustics systems
    • Design, evaluation and selection of piezo-ceramic components used for new and ongoing transducer/sensor design and production projects
    • Provide transducer engineering expertise to support the manufacturing of piezo-electric products
    • Test and evaluate new transducer designs using laboratory equipment for acoustic and vibration measurements
    • Analysis of transducer output sensitivity/noise, resonances, etc., necessary to characterize a transducer
    • Perform value analysis during the product design phase while optimizing product development costs
    • Coordinate projects and tasks with other systems, mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to complete assignments and projects on schedule
    • Research and investigate leading edge technologies for creating new products or processes

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience in Acoustics or Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant engineering or physical science discipline
    • 2-5+ years minimum experience in piezo-electric transducer design in the medical, oil & gas, safety, automotive, aerospace, defense, or industrial markets
    • Knowledge of piezo-ceramic types, modes, and properties useful for transducer design
    • Working knowledge of mechanical design software such as Solid Works
    • Working knowledge of numerical modeling techniques for electro-acoustic performance prediction as well as Finite Element Method (FEM) software such as Abaqus, ANSYS, ATILA or COMSOL for piezo devices
    • Knowledge of how to design metal, plastic, and ceramic parts including material selection and fabrication techniques
    • Knowledge of adhesives for different materials and their uses in transducer production
    • General knowledge of electronics, soldering, connectors, etc.
    • Good written and oral communication skills
    • Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work with every level of the organization
