Position Overview

Performs various tasks relating to the safe and efficient transport of passengers on a tram vehicle for District 6 Bob Harrison Senior Center. This is a part-time weekday position. Must be able to adhere to a flexible schedule. Must be available for early morning and afternoon trips.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates a tram vehicle safely and efficiently in accordance with established routes, schedules, and operating procedures.
  • Assists passengers with boarding and exiting the tram, including passengers with disabilities or special needs, if required.
  • Monitors track conditions, traffic crossings, weather conditions, and other operational hazards and notifies dispatch of potential problems.
  • Reports accidents, incidents, delays, or other safety concerns to dispatch and appropriate personnel.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment, vehicle defects, or damage to the tram.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tram, including brakes, lights, doors, mirrors, communication systems, safety equipment, and other operating components prior to placing the vehicle into service.
  • Responsible for ensuring the tram interior and operators compartment are maintained in a clean and orderly condition and that the vehicle is prepared for service on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintains accurate operational records, logs, and reports as required.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations, operating procedures, and customer service standards.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Experience operating passenger transit vehicles, rail vehicles, or other commercial transportation equipment preferred.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of people.
  • Knowledge of requirements and standards related to the safe and efficient operation of passenger transit vehicles.
  • Skill in the operation of rail vehicles or commercial transportation equipment.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing the operation of passenger transit systems.
  • Ability to identify vehicle problems, equipment malfunctions, and safety hazards and report them appropriately.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and/or CPR techniques.
  • Ability to maintain records and complete required reports accurately.
  • Excellent situational awareness and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

  • Must have the mobility to safely operate a tram vehicle.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods and occasionally walk, stand, bend, and climb steps.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.

Certifications or Licenses Required

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid Alabama Drivers License.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain any licenses, certifications, or operator permits required to operate a tram/light rail vehicle.
  • A satisfactory driving record that demonstrates a commitment to safety with no more than two moving violations and no accidents within the previous three years and no suspensions, disqualifications, or revocations.
  • Minimum of two years of verifiable experience operating commercial vehicles, rail vehicles, or completion of a qualified, comprehensive operator training program preferred.
  • Must maintain a good driving record with the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
  • Must successfully complete a drug screen, physical examination, and any required operator training and certification programs.
  • Must have no prior history of drug/alcohol abuse or addiction.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony, crime of moral turpitude, or an offense involving alcohol or other drugs.

Schedule

Primarily Monday through Friday, along with weekend and holiday flexibility when needed; up to 29 hours per week.
