About the Role
The Traffic Engineering Project Manager is responsible for leading and delivering traffic and transportation engineering projects for public and private sector clients, with full ownership of project performance, client relationships, and technical delivery.
This role is intended for a professional who can operate with a high degree of independence and is ready to take on end-to-end project responsibility, including scoping, execution, and client management. The position plays a key role in supporting the growth of the practice by taking ownership of existing work and contributing to new opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Project Ownership & Delivery
- Lead and manage traffic engineering projects from scoping through final delivery
- Take full ownership of project scope, schedule, budget, and profitability
- Proactively identify and manage risks, scope changes, and client expectations
- Ensure high-quality technical deliverables and consistency across projects
- Delegate and oversee work performed by junior staff, ensuring efficiency and accuracy
Client Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, agencies, and stakeholders
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsiveness, reliability, and technical expertise
- Lead client meetings, presentations, and coordination with reviewing agencies
- Anticipate client needs and identify opportunities to expand services
Technical Leadership
- Oversee and perform traffic engineering analyses, including:
- Traffic Impact Studies
- Roadway operational analyses
- Intersection capacity and safety analysis
- Signal operations and design
- Multimodal evaluations
- Review and approve technical reports, plans, and specifications
- Provide direction and mentorship to junior staff and support their development
Business Development & Practice Growth
- Develop scopes of work, schedules, and fee proposals with minimal oversight
- Identify and pursue opportunities with existing and new clients
- Contribute to proposal efforts, interviews, and client strategy
- Support the overall growth and positioning of the traffic practice
Team Coordination
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, planning, TDM, development services)
- Ensure projects are appropriately staffed and executed efficiently
- Support internal collaboration and cross-selling opportunities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related field
- 6+ years of relevant experience in traffic or transportation engineering (consulting preferred)
- Strong understanding of traffic analysis, signal timing, and roadway design principles
- Experience with traffic engineering software (e.g., Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, HCS)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD or MicroStation
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a billable environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months
- Experience managing projects from proposal through delivery
- Experience leading client relationships and agency coordination
- Experience mentoring and overseeing junior staff
- Familiarity with local municipal and DOT review processes

The estimated starting base salary for this role is $100,000 to $115,000
