VHB's growing Hauppauge office is seeking a Traffic Engineering Project Manager to join our Transportation team. This position is ideal for a transportation professional with strong expertise in traffic operations, traffic impact analysis, and private development who enjoys solving complex mobility challenges and working directly with clients, municipalities, and agencies throughout Long Island.

You'll lead high-profile transportation studies for some of the region's largest developments—including mixed-use, healthcare, institutional, and commercial projects—from early planning through approvals and implementation. Our team is trusted by developers, municipalities, and land-use attorneys to provide expert transportation analyses, operational recommendations, and technical guidance that improve safety, mobility, and community outcomes.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Lead traffic operations and transportation planning studies for complex public and private development projects.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to municipalities, developers, and land-use attorneys on transportation impacts, safety, mobility, and roadway operations.

Responsibilities

• Manage traffic engineering, transportation planning, and/or safety projects and contracts.
• Attend and lead meetings with agencies, clients, consultant partners, and stakeholders.
• Develop new project opportunities, manage client relationships, and prepare and manage proposal submissions.
• Prepare and present traffic impact studies, operational analyses, technical reports, and expert testimony supporting project approvals and public hearings.
• Complete traffic safety and operational improvement studies for localized intersections and corridors.
• Lead development of Traffic Impact Analyses (TIAs) and/or TIA reviews on behalf of municipalities.
• Evaluate transportation impacts associated with private development projects and recommend operational improvements and mitigation strategies.
• Provide analyses of traffic safety issues, crash trends, and crash reduction measures.
• Oversee comprehensive safety studies to determine crash contributing factors and identify appropriate countermeasures.
• Oversee quality and contribute to complex technical decisions on a range of multimodal transportation engineering assignments.
• Address community traffic engineering and safety issues, including participation in public meetings and stakeholder engagement.
• Manage projects involving the design of traffic control devices (signs, markings, and signals).
• Develop mobility solutions that consider all users, including motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and public transit users of all ages and abilities.
• Maintain familiarity with Long Island municipalities, NYSDOT, county agencies, and local traffic operations and safety policies and practices.
• Work collaboratively with the team while providing leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to staff.

Skills and Abilities

• Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
• Strong writing skills for proposals, technical reports and memoranda
• Ability to present at public meetings as part of project outreach
• The ability to manage multiple projects and work independently
• An understanding of effectively overseeing multi-disciplinary projects and teams
• Experience managing projects and marketing transportation services
• Motivated to lead and mentor junior team members

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field of study required
• Master’s degree a plus
• 8+ years of professional experience in traffic/transportation engineering required
• Experience with Long Island, NY region transportation projects preferred
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure required
• Understanding of Vissim and Synchro preferred
• Experience with SEQRA preferred

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $170,000 if located in Long Island. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
