The Stamford JCC Performing Arts Department is seekinga passionate, creative, and skilled individual to join our full-time team as Theater Director & Production Associate.
In this dynamic position, the Theater Creative Director will serve as the Lead Theater Instructor, teaching a variety of classes for students of all ages. Instruction will span multiple theatrical disciplines including (but not limited to) Acting, Improvisation, Musical Theater, and Voice.
In addition to teaching, the TheaterCreativeDirector & Production Associate will play a key role in the production and technical execution of all Performing Arts at the J performances.Responsibilities will includeoverseeing technical elements such as sound, lighting, and set coordinationof all JCC Performing Arts productions, assistingwith stage management and backstage operations, and supporting rehearsal operations.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is both a passionatetheater educator and a collaborative, hands-on contributor behind the scenesin bringing youth arts programs and performances to life.
Responsibilities:
Instruction:
- Serve as Lead Instructor for all theater classesand seasonal performing arts camps
- Teach a range of theatrical disciplines, including acting, improvisation, voice, and musical theater, to students from preschool through middle school
- Serve as class assistant for a variety of other Performing & Fine Arts classes
- Act as Theater and Music Director for productions(3 dedicated theater productions per year currently)
- Provide private and small-group voice instructionas needed
- Choreograph basic musical theater movement and stage blocking
Production:
- Collaborate with Dance and Theaterstaff, and lead productionon all JCC Performing Artsperformances
- Overseetechnical elements such as sound, lighting, and set coordinationof all shows
- Assistwith stage management and backstage operations
- Supportthe creation, organization, dissemination ofrehearsal schedules
Administration:
- Support the overall operations of the department as directed by the Director of Operations, Performing Arts
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Operations Performing Arts, Senior Director of Programming, and JCC CEO
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum 2-3 years of teachingand directorialexperience (working with preschool and school-aged children strongly preferred)
- A bachelor's or master's degree in theater or music, or at least 3 years of professional experience.
- Available to teach weekday afternoonsand early evenings
- Available for rehearsals and performances onweekends, as performances and special eventsrequire
- Experience with Lighting and/or Sound design and related software
- Stage managementexperience
- Must be a team player: someone who communicates openly and can collaborate well
- Ability to liaise in a professional manner with parents and students
- Available to start on or about August
Additional Skill Sets (appreciated but not required):
- Proficient pianist (or another musical instrument)
- Set design
- Dance and/or choreography experience
- Interestin other Performing & Fine Arts Disciplines
