Description

Test Engineer Industrial Gas / Combustion Equipment
Kent, WA

About Us

We are a leading provider of custom-engineered gas and energy systems, delivering high-performance solutions for industries ranging from energy and utilities to data centers and industrial processing. Our Gas Systems are the cornerstone of our business, specializing in complex, build-to-order equipment including pressure vessels, heat transfer systems, and integrated process skids.

Our team thrives at the intersection of engineering and manufacturing, designing innovative systems while staying closely connected to the shop floor to ensure everything we create is practical, manufacturable, and reliable in the field.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on Test Engineer to join an established industrial equipment manufacturer in the Kent / South Seattle area.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys figuring out how to answer difficult engineering questions through physical testing. You will own the testing process from defining the methodology and building the test setup through instrumentation, execution, data analysis, and final engineering conclusions.

You will work directly with vaporizer, burner, combustion, thermal, and pressurized-gas equipment in a lab and shop environment. This is not a test-technician, quality, or procedure-execution role. The Test Engineer is expected to determine what needs to be tested, how to test it safely and repeatably, and what the resulting data means for the product and engineering team.

Success in this role requires strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, comfort working around real hardware, and the ability to move fluidly between building a test rig, troubleshooting equipment, analyzing data, and documenting the results.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document test plans and test methodologies for industrial gas, vaporizer, burner, and related products
  • Determine what measurements and test conditions are required to answer engineering and product-performance questions
  • Design, specify, build, and modify physical test stands, rigs, fixtures, and experimental setups
  • Select and integrate instrumentation and data-acquisition equipment for pressure, flow, temperature, thermal performance, and other physical measurements
  • Execute performance, feasibility, development, and validation testing
  • Work safely around high-pressure gases, flammable gases, combustion systems, high temperatures, and other hazardous test conditions
  • Establish safe and repeatable test procedures, including purge, pressure-relief, leak-checking, and related test-safety practices
  • Troubleshoot unexpected equipment behavior and develop tests that help isolate root causes
  • Reduce and analyze raw test data and translate the results into clear engineering conclusions
  • Identify performance deviations and provide data that supports engineering design changes
  • Prepare clear test procedures, reports, findings, and technical documentation
  • Work from mechanical drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and related engineering documentation
  • Perform hands-on rig assembly, instrumentation installation, and lab/shop troubleshooting
  • Maintain and support test equipment, instrumentation, and data-acquisition systems
  • Partner closely with product engineers, development engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel
  • Support field validation, commissioning, and customer-site troubleshooting when needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Approximately 3 5 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing physical engineering tests
  • Experience independently developing test plans, methodologies, or experimental procedures
  • Experience designing, building, or modifying test stands, test rigs, fixtures, or similar hardware
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Experience measuring physical parameters such as pressure, flow, temperature, or thermal performance
  • Experience testing mechanical, thermal, fluid, gas, combustion, propulsion, energy, or similarly complex physical systems
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working directly with tools, hardware, tubing/piping, instrumentation, and fabricated equipment
  • Ability to analyze test data and translate findings into meaningful engineering conclusions
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of testing from initial question through final results
  • Clear technical writing and communication skills
  • Experience working with drawings, schematics, P&IDs, or similar engineering documentation

We'd Be Really Excited If You Had One or More of These

  • Direct experience with combustion systems, burners, fired equipment, boilers, furnaces, or fuel systems
  • Experience with LPG, propane, natural gas, industrial gas, or process-gas equipment
  • Experience testing high-pressure or flammable gases
  • Background in rocket propulsion, aerospace ground testing, gas turbines, engine development, hydrogen, cryogenic systems, or other hazardous-energy environments
  • Experience with pressure transducers, thermocouples, flow meters, temperature sensors, and DAQ systems
  • Experience selecting and installing instrumentation rather than simply operating existing test equipment
  • Working knowledge of purge systems, pressure relief, leak checking, stored-energy hazards, or electrical area classification
  • Experience with thermal-fluid or heat-transfer testing
  • Experience working directly with machinists, welders, technicians, or fabrication teams
  • Field validation, commissioning, or customer-site troubleshooting experience

What Success Looks Like

  • Develop safe, repeatable, and well-documented test methods that produce trustworthy engineering data
  • Deliver validation and performance data on schedule so engineering teams can make timely decisions
  • Identify product-performance deviations before they become field or customer issues
  • Independently determine what test will answer an engineering question rather than relying on predefined procedures
  • Build and instrument effective test setups for difficult or unusual measurement challenges
  • Diagnose unexpected hardware behavior through structured engineering testing
  • Convert raw test data into clear conclusions and actionable recommendations
  • Become a trusted technical resource for testing, validation, and product troubleshooting

Work Environment

This is a hands-on engineering position involving regular work in a lab, shop, and manufacturing environment. The role includes exposure to heat, noise, pressurized systems, moving equipment, combustion, and other industrial hazards.

Candidates should be comfortable performing physical work associated with equipment assembly and testing, including bending, kneeling, gripping, pushing/pulling, and occasional lifting of approximately 50 75 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of the role.

Compensation

  • Salary range: $90,000 $115,000 annually
  • Full-time engineering opportunity based in the Kent / South Seattle, Washington area
  • Opportunity to work directly on complex industrial gas, combustion, thermal, and mechanical systems
  • Highly hands-on role with meaningful ownership of engineering testing and product-development decisions
