What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply.

You will support LANL's Start-Up and Commissioning organization by planning, coordinating, performing, and validating Test, Adjust & Balance (TAB) activities that enable safe, reliable turnover of building ventilation and HVAC systems to the owning organization. In this role, you will manage TAB scope on a portfolio of small projects, integrating TAB execution with commissioning verification, deficiency resolution, and turnover documentation. Your work helps ensure facilities meet design intent and operational requirements, particularly for safety-significant ventilation and environmental control systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • TAB technical experience: working knowledge of HVAC airside systems, hydronic systems, and the principles of testing, adjusting, and balancing (airflow, pressure relationships, temperature/humidity control, water flow).
  • Field planning & coordination: ability to understand TAB scopes, sequences, and data requirements; coordinate with construction, controls, and operations to support efficient system readiness and testing.
  • Oversight of subcontracted testing: ability to act as technical representative for TAB agencies and vendors; review methods, witness critical tests, and verify results meet acceptance criteria.
  • Documentation & data integrity: ability to review and validate TAB reports, trend/data logs, and as-left settings; maintain punch lists and turnover packages.
  • Safety leadership: demonstrated commitment to safe work execution in active construction/operating environments, including enforcing work controls and pausing or stopping work when conditions are unsafe.
  • Communication: strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present test status, issues, and recommendations to project teams and stakeholders.

Training/Certifications: Ability to complete required LANL training to support field oversight and testing (work control, electrical safety, fall protection, respiratory protection if assigned). Relevant industry certifications (AABC/NEBB) are valued.

Education/Experience: Position requires five or more years of TAB/commissioning, construction, facilities operations, or engineering support experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience specializing in building systems testing and turnover.


Desired Qualifications:

  • AABC Certified Test and Balance Technician (TBT) or NEBB Certified TAB Technician (CTT) / similar credentials.
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS), controls verification, and functional performance testing integration with TAB.
  • Experience developing acceptance criteria and test procedures for ventilation systems (including exhaust, make-up air, pressure control, and filtration systems).
  • Ability to analyze test data (e.g., trending, fan and pump curves, stability) and recommend corrective actions.
  • Familiarity with commissioning deliverables (commissioning plans, checklists, functional test procedures, deficiency tracking, turnover packages, TAB reports).

Work Location:The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
