The Department of Chemical & Biomedical Engineering (CBE) at the Florida A&M University (FAMU)-Florida State University (FSU) College of Engineering invites applications from highly qualified individuals for a tenure track faculty position in biomedical engineering, in the city of Tallahassee, Florida. We are seeking faculty candidates for an assistant professor position; however, exceptional candidates at higher ranks will be considered.
CBE has a dynamic group of faculty members actively involved in research encompassing various areas of chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and biomedical engineering. The department has seen major expansion in the graduate and undergraduate biomedical and chemical engineering education and research activities since the establishment of an undergraduate BME degree in 2019 through the hiring of 15 new faculty members and approximately doubling of the graduate and undergraduate enrollment. The expanding college of engineering has increased research expenditures by 195% over the last 5 years ($87.6M in FY2025) and is continuing to grow its faculty and campus. A new research facility (the Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building) was completed in Spring of 2025, and an additional engineering building was recently funded by the state legislature. Our nationally recognized and award-winning faculty members have access to state-of-the-art laboratories for research in biomedical and chemical engineering and the two programs are closely integrated in research and education. In addition to present faculty at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and its associated research centers, successful candidates will have many opportunities to interact and collaborate at both universities (including the FSU College of Medicine, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, and the FAMU College of Pharmacy).
The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the nexus of two major public universities, each with a distinct mission but focused on world-class engineering education and research. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1982, the joint institution is the college of engineering for both Florida A&M and Florida State universities. This unique combination of focus, resources and mission from our parent institutions has created on our campus a truly innovative atmosphere that leverages the benefits of the traditional HBCU model with the innovations of an R1 public research university. The College fosters interdisciplinary research and collaboration across engineering, science, medicine, and other fields, while providing faculty, researchers, and students access to the complementary expertise and resources of both universities. All seven of the college's eligible undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org.
Candidates must possess an earned Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, and demonstrate documented potential for outstanding research. Although all applications will be reviewed, priority will be given to candidates that complement and build upon our research in polymeric biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and 3D bioprinting with a goal of aligning with the new FSU Health Initiative. Areas of particular interest include stem cell engineering, nanoparticle engineering, gene editing, immunomodulation, biomaterials, and biomedical imaging.
Successful candidates are expected to develop research programs that are internationally recognized with significant and sustained funding, incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers across campus, and demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in education. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and supervising undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers are expected.
If qualified and interested in the position, applicants should apply to Florida State University at https://hr.fsu.edu/facultyjobs, Job ID: 63474 with the following documents:
Application review will begin on November 1, 2026. Acceptance and review of applications will continue until the position is filled. The appointment is anticipated to begin in August 2027. About FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the joint college of engineering of Florida A&M University and Florida State University, the only such joint college of its kind in the United States. The joint college was established as a joint program serving two universities in Tallahassee, Florida: The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, which received recognition from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in 2010 for ranking number one as the institution of origin for African Americans earning Doctorates in Natural Science and Engineering; and, Florida State University which has gained worldwide recognition for its extensive graduate and research programs. The college is located less than three miles from either university. The school enrolls about 3,050 undergraduates and graduate students, including Master of Science, Master of Engineering, and Ph.D.-seeking students. Approximately 85% of these students attend FSU and 15% attend FAMU, which equates to roughly 23% of the student bodies at both universities. The college operates from a 200,000-square-foot complex of buildings next to Innovation Park in Tallahassee.
