The Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Journalism to join its Journalism & Media Practices Division. This full-time, nine-month faculty appointment has an anticipated start date of August 1, 2027.

This position is part of a strategic faculty cluster examining the communicative foundations of democratic society. Through coordinated hiring across the departments three academic three academic divisions-Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies, Communication & Media Science, and Journalism & Media Practices-Texas A&M University is investing in scholarship that advances understanding of communication, public knowledge, citizenship, civic participation, and the institutions and practices that sustain democratic public life. The initiative reflects the departments commitment to strengthening each of its scholarly traditions while fostering intellectual exchange across complementary perspectives on communication and public life.

We seek a scholar whose research advances scholarship in journalism and media through the study of how journalism, news, and media institutions produce, distribute, and sustain public knowledge in democratic society and evolve as democratic institutions. Competitive candidates will demonstrate a promising and theoretically grounded program of scholarship examining the evolving roles of journalism, information systems, media institutions, and public communication in informing publics, fostering civic participation, and supporting democratic life. We welcome scholars using a wide range of rigorous methodological approaches whose work contributes to advancing scholarship in journalism and media through research that is theoretically significant, methodologically rigorous, and socially consequential.

Successful candidates will be expected to develop and sustain a strong program of scholarship, publish in leading scholarly outlets, demonstrate evidence of capacity to secure external funding appropriate to their career stage and area of scholarship, teach foundational courses and courses in their area of scholarly expertise, and contribute to departmental, university, and professional service. As a member of the Journalism & Media Practices Division, the successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth of journalism at Texas A&M while helping strengthen one of the departments signature areas of strategic investment.

The Department of Communication and Journalism administers BA and BS degrees in communication, media, and journalism and offers MA and PhD degrees in Communication. The department includes more than 50 faculty members, over 35 communication graduate students, and approximately 1,700 undergraduate students. The department values disciplinary excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and innovative teaching. The successful candidate will join the Journalism & Media Practices Division. This division is one of the departments three complementary academic divisions, which also encompass Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies and Communication & Media Science. Together, these divisions examine communication, media, and journalism through distinct but complementary disciplinary perspectives, creating a rich intellectual environment for faculty mentoring, scholarly exchange, and graduate education.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Journalism, Mass Communication, Communication, Media Studies, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated promise of developing a distinguished program of scholarship in journalism studies.
• Evidence of excellence or strong potential in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to mentor graduate students.

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of an emerging record of pursuing or securing external funding appropriate to career stage and area of scholarship.
• Professional journalistic experience that complements a program of scholarly research.
